The fact that he's lost basically the entire conference, the NY GOP, and other NY House members, I mean at this point.. how do you just not resign. I'm honestly surprised at how quickly even many GOPers coalesced against him.

As predicted above, this appears to be moving very fast now that he's delivered his vote for McCarthy and the rules package and functionally outlived his usefulness.

I wouldn’t be surprised if GOP leadership is secretly hoping he DOESN’T resign, he managed to win a D+2 seat that hasn’t been held by a Republican in a decade that could very easily elect a Democrat in a hypothetical special election

They likely have polling showing they can hold the seat in a general election if they are calling this vocally for it. There is probably already a candidate in mind (previous tweet mentioned Martins) who could then run with the benefit of incumbency in the 2024 general.

Is this real? That would be hilarious as such a random lie.

The Nassau County GOP chair said Santos told him he was a "star" volleyball player in college.

Santos, who claimed to have attended Baruch College, later admitted he did not attend the school.

Top Nassau Republicans are now calling on Santos to resign from office.

The chairman of the Nassau County Republican Party on Tuesday said that embattled Rep. George Santos told him that he was a "star player" on a the volleyball team for a college that he did not attend.

During a press conference featuring top Nassau GOP officials calling on Santos to resign from Congress, Joseph Cairo said that the congressman fabricated his involvement with the Baruch College sports team while being vetted during the campaign.

"He told me ... that he was a star on the Baruch volleyball team and that they won the league championship," Cairo said of Santos.

I wonder whether he can just sit this out when Republicans are also calling for him to resign. If there's a special election, Suozzi should jump back in to reclaim his old seat. I never understood why he gave it up for a vanity run for governor. Both he and Charlie Crist made a huge mistake and may have cost the Democrats two seats.

Suozzi may not be your ideal Democrat, but he's not like Joe Manchin and certainly the best you get out of that district.

I love how Republicans have elected the conservative meme version of Brian Williams.

Yeah... they elected him to serve BEFORE all of this came out and BEFORE they all knew his entire life was a lie. McCarthy is such a little f**ker. So the only way that you should be kicked out of congress is if you were charged with a crime?

I wouldn’t be surprised if GOP leadership is secretly hoping he DOESN’T resign, he managed to win a D+2 seat that hasn’t been held by a Republican in a decade that could very easily elect a Democrat in a hypothetical special election

The faster way to force this than a criminal investigation (which could take months or years) is an investigation by the House Ethics Committee, which can then decide whether or not it wants to recommend expulsion. In the recent past only people actually convicted of crimes have been expelled from the House, but this isn't a requirement and in cases where evidence of wrongdoing is very clear-cut the Senate Ethics Committee has twice recommended expulsion before a conviction (for Pete Williams in 1982 and Bob Packwood in 1996); the House Ethics Committee could take a similar course of action.

There are two kind of similar recent scandals I can think of. The good precedent for Santos would be the case of Julia Salazar, a member of the NY state Senate who also faked large portions of her biography -- but in her case the evidence of wrongdoing came out before the election and she won anyway. (Santos actually won by so much that I wonder if he could've eked it out regardless; then he would in fact have had much more of a mandate). The bad precedent would be Steve Watkins, a Kansas Republican elected in 2018, whose lies were actually of a much smaller caliber but who got blown out in the next primary.

Crist's seat as redrawn isn't quite Safe R but it would only go D in the largest of landslides; under current boundaries it would've elected a Republican in 2018/2020 -- the former by like a point though -- and voted Trump+8 in 2020 and Trump+7 in 2016.

Santos's seat is harder to discuss because it had been consistently Likely D for many years before 2022, but in 2022 voted strongly Republican up and down the ballot (Santos won by 8 ). Absent any evidence of huge shifts from 2022 -- recent special elections and polls seem about the same -- it shouldn't be that difficult of a GOP hold. If anything, a less nationalized election should help Republicans here. OTOH, it isn't that weird for scandals that caused a resignation to rebound on the party of the old incumbent, even if the replacement nominee has nothing to do with them -- see Mike Garcia winning Katie Hill's old seat. George Santos would be an unhelpful presence for the GOP in any possible special election.

Is there a scenario where they could hold a recall?

There is no recall mechanism for Representatives or Senators.

My guess is that the GOP knows that there is worse about him that has yet to surface publicly and they want him gone before it comes out.

Question; what happens if a member of congress is extradited and imprisoned in a foreign country? Is there any way to vacate his seat?

Santos will likely be the last person to realize that Santos is done.
