Meanwhile half of the Republican Party approves of the riots, and their conspiracy theory was validated by a majority of the Republican House caucus just hours after the attack!

To be fair, pretty much every Republican has condemned the violence, just as how establishment Dems condemned BLM riots.

147 Republicans voted to object to the election based on the president's lies. They know his claims are and have always been completely fabricated and they've decided perpetuating the lies is worth more to them than defending and uniting the country. Those lies triggered the violence by Trump's supporters. He's radicalized them with lies that their country is being stolen from them, their culture is being stolen from them, their election is being stolen from them.

The lies are behind the violence and unless the Republican Party comes out and apologizes to the nation for breeding terrorism in the gullible to get votes, they're 100% still the pieces of crap to blame.

Saying "I still think I won but don't hurt people" with no affect isn't worth a bucket of snake piss.

But it’s different from actually supporting the violence, which I’ve seen no Republican do so far.

An Al Qaeda recruiter who never leaves camp or hurts someone directly is still to blame. You don't get to spend years radicalizing people and suddenly be outraged they're radicalized and insane. They need to stop the lying or they're knowingly encouraging more of this. 147 of them voted with hopes of maintaining this madness to further their own ambitions. They're all going to hell when they die.

I don’t think they actually wanted to incite violence though.

They're adults. They saw the violence happen. Even if they didn't want it go that far they still continued the behavior that made it happen. If they were naïve, that excuse was eradicated by the time the 147 traitors made that vote. It was criminally irresponsible and deliberate.

And none of them have the excuse that they believe the vote was truly stolen. They all know how elections work and none are trying to throw out congressional results where they won. They know Trump lost because his behavior turned out Democratic voters, but they're afraid his base won't vote for them in 2022 or 2024 without this commitment to the lies he's made them believe.

This isn’t me supporting the people opposing the certification of electoral votes- they should honestly resign immediately- but opposing the results doesn’t mean they actually support the violence.

Yes it does.  Because Josh Hawley's calculus was:

A) Don't lie, allow peaceful transition

B) Lie out of political ambition, inflame people with a great chance of protest, violence, spreading covid.

He'd choose B every damn time.

They’re wasn’t violence after the election itself or the meeting of the Electoral College, so it wasn’t unthinkable that they’re wouldn’t be violence this time.

Yeah right.  Next you'll be telling us that the executives who marketed the 1970's Ford Pinto did nothing wrong even though they knew the car would blow up.

This insurgency took many by surprise.

Get real

"The bear didn't attack me the first two times I poked it. Surely it won't bite me if I poke it a third time!"

I mean, if you’ve poked a bear twice and it hasn’t moved, solid chance it’s dead, so yeah, pretty much.

I never got to post in this thread due to being quite busy yesterday, as rare as that is, but I obviously still couldn't ignore the absolute travesty that happened.

Just a few days ago I said that the Raffensperger phone call was the culmination of everything in Trump's presidency and his most impeachable offense yet, but holy f***! Within days of that we have the absolute biggest culminating event of the Trump era. I knew it was going to be ugly yesterday, but this, as predictable as it actually was, still managed to catch me off-guard. When the Raffensperger call was the most relevant controversy of Trump's final weeks, I believed it was impeachable but not worth going through the procedure with only a few weeks left. But after yesterday this nation cannot take 13 more days of this worst President in our nation's history, who should be referred to as such without any hesitation. Something has to be done. He and his party too, especially cretins like Cruz, Hawley, and 60% or more of the GOP House have to face consequences. Everything about yesterday was nothing short of sedition. And even if the means of impeaching him again or invoking the 25th Amendment don't end up bearing fruit, they have to be attempted for the sake of precedent.

I will say though, there are silver linings to this incident. It once again proved to be a black-light event where Americans can plainly see who Trump is, and always has been. Same with the political party he has had grovelling at his feet for the past four years. I felt very validated by the storming of the capitol while simultaneously feeling even more nausea than I did during Trump's acquittal last year (and I literally had the stomach flu as that was unfolding). The Republican Party should be destroyed and rebuilt from the ground up. Obviously that won't happen. But even without that happening, it should be a stain on their party for the rest of this nation's history. Yesterday was the moment that will cement the legacies of everyone who has ever supported Trump in even the most minor ways. And sure, we had some Republicans change their minds about objecting to the certification subverting our democracy, but I think it reflects poorly on the party that it took them to be potentially be directly, physically harmed to finally have even the barest minimum of an epiphany for feeling shame, humility, and/or recognizing that their party's behavior over the past four years or more can actually have dangerous consequences. That's always how things are with Republicans though, they only accept reality when they feel tangibly affected by something, especially if their hold on political power is threatened. If I wasn't steadfast in my will to never vote for a Republican ever, under any circumstance, before; I sure as s*** am never voting for one now. They have irrevocably damaged our country.

I’m not saying they aren’t responsible for the violence, I’m saying that they didn’t actually intend for it to happen.

That they continued the lying which triggered the violence after the violence happened proves their personal power is more important to them than preventing the violence. Hawley made his objection intending for more violence because violence was now provably the outcome of such lies. He decided he'd rather have Trump supporters back him in 2024 or 2028, even if more Americans died.

Their hasn’t been additional violence after the session resumed, including after further objections were raised, so it shows violence wasn’t gaurunteed.

I think we might need to consider the idea that a newbie R-Vatican avatar with the username "The Reckoning" might have a somewhat more positive outlook on what happened yesterday than he is letting on.

It is at least partially their fault, but I don’t think they intended it to happen.

That doesn't matter. If you do something and it accidentally burns down your neighbor's house, then you do the same ****ing thing in their new house, you're doing it on purpose now.

They’re wasn’t precedent to suggest violence would happen.

An interesting perspective: My father, (lifelong Reagan Republican since 92, voted Trump in 2016) has been so radicalized by 2020 that not only did he vote for Biden, he is re-registering as an Independent and thinks that he will never vote for a Republican again.

Massive convoy of police cars and other emergency personnel passed my apartment complex a little while ago. They were headed in the general direction of Capitol Hill.

To everyone who lives in DC and area: please stay safe tonight!  Appreciate the first hand reports.  I have been jumping back to this thread for over a day now and it has been great.

I don't think the severity of this terrorist attack sunk in right away.  Every network was jammed yesterday.  I went and grabbed a newspaper today, and there was an entire section dedicated to this.  I will file it in with the 9/11, Y2K, the JFK assassination, and orher newspapers that my family has collected over the years.

To everyone being mean or generalizing all 74 million Americans who voted for this guy,  please show compassion.  These terrorists are/were radicals, not ordinary folks.  Much like all the trouble in the summer with the riots in Minneapolis and Kenosha, or the Charlottesville rally and terrorist attack in 2017.  If anything, these events show us the true dangers of extremist ideologies and internet echo chambers.  Right wing terrorism appears to be a big threat now.  Be kind to your neighbors, family, and friends... and even strangers on the internet.  People got duped by a conman, and if they believed the election fraud nonsense, they're rightfully upset right now.  Biden's unity message has a certain panche to it that really resonates well with me.  His speech yesterday was beautiful.

There is a difference in the character of people, yes. Knowing that your self-serving lies are provoking violence, not supporting that violence, but continuing to tell them anyway, shows even worse character.

No it’s explicitly supporting the violence. They are lying, these lies were used to incite this mob, they immediately went back to lying. Alternately they actually believe this, in which case the violence was justified.
In either case, this vote is supporting the insurrection.

Lying doesn’t mean you supported the violence anymore than supporting BLM meant you agreed with the occupation of downtown Seattle.

I live here. Stop using my beloved city as a cheap talking point, you f#%king fascist! Shut the f#%k up! SHUT THE F#%K UP!

I’m a fascist for pointing out that most Republicans doesn’t condone the violence? It’s a fact.

Don’t get me wrong, Hawley, Trump, and most of the GOP in congress needs to be expelled, but to say that they all supported the violence seems a bit disingenuous to me when most have condemned it.

That's like saying when some Saudi sheik who funded a radical Salafi madrassa that educated a bunch of people who went on to join al-Qaeda and commit terror acts, the Saudi sheik "doesn't actually condone the violence."

No. It doesn't work that way.

I mean, I would have supported statehood for the district either way. If this does somehow result in DC statehood, then I suppose we have one more positive side effect besides the self-defeating nature of what has happened from the POV of those who launched the attacks. Trump and Co lost control of the most radical of their supporters after all.

Updating the title by the hour as things get worse for Trump has never been more simultaneously depressing (for the sake of the nation) and refreshing.

Who is the 5th dead person? Please don't tell me it was the cop who was in critical condition.

Are you mentally incompetent? I mean I saw the blue avatar.

Nobody is suggesting that lying is an arcane ritual which immediately summons redneck shock troops to smear feces on the walls. I'm saying it's radicalizing people and is leading the country in a direction toward further violence.

No s@%t it’s radicalizing people, but that doesn’t mean they actually condone the violence.

We can argue that their isn’t a real difference in effect, but I do believe there is a difference in the character of people.

That's like saying when some Saudi sheik who funded a radical Salafi madrassa that educated a bunch of people who went on to join al-Qaeda and commit terror acts, the Saudi sheik "doesn't actually condone the violence."

No. It doesn't work that way.

It literally does. If the person doesn’t condone the violence, they don’t condone the violence. Period.

You can understand this fact and still want 147 Republicans and Trump to be kicked out of office.
