Looks like John Ensign's "campaign" for president is over before it begins.

Does it matter? That's another eat the democrats will gain. In this nation you must be ashamed to be straight and go to jail. But if you send  naked photos of your self to Under age teens you walk away free. Just ask Mark Foley and the mayor of Portland

whoa

I wonder why he came out with this now. The answer: He wants it out there before seriously looking into his 2012 run so that the skeletons are already out.

You kidding?  If Ensign does lose his Nevada Senate seat, it certainly won't be for sexual immorality.

Apparently Politico is reporting that blackmail may have been involved.

They also indicate that the affair occurred during a period when Ensign was separated from his wife. They later reconciled, and the affair ended.

That won't be until 2012. He ran against a weak challenger in 2006 in a bad year for Republicans and won. In 2012, things might still be as bad for Republicans in general... and really-bad for Ensign if he should face a strong Democratic challenger.

I think he's handling this the best he can.  His 2012 hopes might not be dashed.  I really hope they aren't because I'd like to see more from him.

I really hope he does run. I like him alot. If Romney and Palin don't run I'll support Ensign.

Ensign is one of the best senators the GOP has to offer. After Tom Coburn and Lindsey Graham.

Not from the sort who thinks that Tom Coburn is a first-rate politician instead of a provincial hack.

If he and his wife were separated, why is it a scandal?

Ignoring the fact that some of us still think being unfaithful even in a separation is wrong, he had an affair with one of his campaign staffers who happened to be married.

Exactly why is Coburn such a bad person?

Actually, it is odd.  I find it hard to imagine someone whose two favorite Senators are Coburn and Graham, considering that Graham is a pragmatist and really is a moderate by Southern Republican standards and that Coburn is about as much of an extremist as one can get in the federal level of American politics.

Reposting what I wrote about this in the other thread:

Meh, I think his national ambitions are done.  The general public wasn't familiar enough with him for them to forgive quickly and move beyond this.  This scandal is how he was introduced to most Americans.  Not good for someone who wants to take on potential titan candidates like Romney, Huckabee, Palin, and Gingrich (whose reputation and familiarity were strong enough with his base for many of them to forgive his own infidelity).

The only reason he was seen as a promising potential candidate to the small community of politicos and insiders was really because he would be a fresh face with no noticeable flaws.  So much for that.

I agree.  He'll run for reelection for his senate seat, but I don't see him running for president now.  The affair is recent *and* it's coming out a couple of years before the campaign has begun, before the public has gotten to know him at all, so this will be their first impression of him.  Of the 10 or so GOP presidential candidates, he would be known as "the guy from Nevada who had an affair with a married woman who worked for him".  Why on Earth would he launch a longshot bid for the presidency from that kind of starting position?

[The fact that he's now stepped down from his leadership is an even more telling sign that he won't run for president.  Doing that is a kind of implicit admission that he's done something that's worth paying a public price for.]

Coming from somebody who lives in OK, Tom Coburn is actually the average Republican in Oklahoma. While he is great on fiscal conservatism, his views on social issues is batsh**t insane. If Coburn was anti-gay marriage and anti-abortion, I might be okay with him. However, he believes gay rights are the biggest threat to American freedom and that abortion doctors should be executed. That's pretty batty to me. If someone is very fiscally conservative but also is somewhat socially conservative (but not excessively), I might vote for them. But Tom Coburn is insane when it comes to socially conservative views.

As for Lindsey Graham, it's because he and JewishConservative share a hatred for the philosophy that government should stay the hell out of our lives: Libertarianism
