Thanks, Lewis! I didn't really think anyone would actually make such a thread Smiley
Now Indo-Iranian is really two subgroups - Iranian and Indo-Aryan, so I' ll give a language from each of them - Ossetian for the Iranian and Bengali for the Indo-Aryan.

Yeah, Ossetian would have been a reasonable candidate for list inclusion as well.

Yeah, Ossetian would have been a reasonable candidate for list inclusion as well.
There are only about half a million Ossetian speakers, so if it was included, you'd have to include about 30 other languages for fairness, which would be a bit too much.
Perhaps you should have done the Baltic languages - missing any would be rather unlikely Smiley

Cheesy

I ought to have included Romani, too. And maybe Maithili.

Romani  is split in many dialects, which are nearly mutualy unintelligible. And many Gypsies don't speak them at all.
Maithili is a good idea, having 40 million even though it was thought as a dialect of both Hindi and Bengali until recently.

Yes, you seem to be rather familiar with Indo-Iranian languages.

The Shiv Sena is pissed.

And the correct answer to this thread is Bengali obviously.

If the poll was divided into an Indo-Aryan and Iranian, which Iranian language would you choose?

I don't know as much about Iranian languages although Farsi sounds pretty cool.
