Haven't been on here in a while. This should be an interesting cycle for PA politics.

Take a look at the Governor's race thread as well.  Already heating up.  As you probably know me and Keystone Phil have a rivalry dating 5 years and counting.  It all started with PA 13, then the 2006 US Senate race.  Interestingly, we've been in total agreement on the last 2 Philadelphia mayors.

For the record, I've been very disappointed with Nutter recently but I still think he was better than the others we would have had.

I'm disappointed in Nutter's decision to close the libraries. Good to know that you support Philly sports teams, Flyers.

Toomey raised over $1 million in about sixty days and, in what is probably bigger news, he has hired Specter's former fundraiser.

I was kind of suspecting this kind of fundraising performance from him. Considering his national connections through the C4G. Imagine the fundraising he will get when the establishment stops praying for a RINO in shining armor and starts to donate and help Toomey.

They've stopped searching for someone and they're starting to praise Toomey.

Yes I know, but the money usually follows the praise, it usually doesn't come with with it at first. Since this represents the past 6o days it represents the period in which people were still "searching". Over the next few months I expect Toomey to either stay the same or improve in fundraising. Either way this will end up the most expensive race maybe after California Governor.

I'd laugh for days if Specter loses the primary, but like in 2004, enough people will line up behind him to give him the victory. He'll sweat it out though.

Agreed!  And Sestak still doesn't have anywhere near Specter's name rec.  Funny I think Sestak in the end would actually do better than Specter.

I agree because unlike Specter, Sestak is not considered to be an out of touch Philadelphian which is the perception of Specter among a lot of Conservative Dems out west that otherwise might stay home or vote Toomey, either way a vote less for Specter is a vote more for Toomey whether they vote for Toomey or not. Sestak can play up his military background which helped McCain a lot out there in the West. If ever you could find a Leftist that was fit for PA, Sestak fits that bill perfectly.

Yes but Sestak will also have the problem of being "the 'moderate' slayer." That may turn off many Independents.

Sestak will be better out west. He can use the military background to his advantage. However, the fact of the matter is that he's more liberal than Specter and that will still be an anchor for him.

Only 28% say Specter deserves another term - http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/pittsburghtrib/news/regional/s_630958.html

Gerlach kind of takes Senate bid off the table - http://blogs.mcall.com/penn_ave/2009/06/gerlach-senate-run-off-the-table.html

That number is drastically inconsistant with most recent polls showing Specter leading both Toomey and Sestak by healthy, albeit not insurmountable, margins. I suspect it's more of an outlier than Specter suddenly becoming less popular than Mark Sanford.

IMHO, I have a hard time taking a uni poll showing half the electorate 'undecided' too seriously.

Well, realize that this is a very different race. Specter doesn't really have the advantage of being a Democratic incumbent so a good deal of Dems are going to hold off on saying that they'll back him. Add in the fact that Sestak is barely known...

Not necessarily. Conservatives want him out. Liberals don't like him, but prefer him to Toomey.

He states that he's Catholic and believes in conversions but not with Arlen - http://articles.lancasteronline.com/local/4/239572

He also said he will not lose - http://www.pennlive.com/news/patriotnews/index.ssf?/base/news/124692630720000.xml&coll=1

I guess it's obvious that he'd say that but he's really swinging at Specter. I'm loving it.

He's been doing an all-county tour of Pennsylvania and spamming his FB fans with multiple updates every day.
