Assuming it's not a school night, they have a legal license, etc.

My parents did actually and I didn't think much of it, but I realize now how quite permissive that was. I didn't even carry a cell phone at the time, so it wasn't like they could contact me either.

Probably. My parents let me do that if I told them where I was going.

The best part is I didn't even have to inform them beforehand really, just leave a note or something at home, something like this "Hey, I went out to Minot to go see some indie bands, I'll be back whenever. -Zack". I'm having a tough time believing it myself in hindsight.

The hilarious thing is I bet most parents in the suburbs here wouldn't let their 16-year old even drive to my neighborhood and hang out past 3AM even if it's only 10-20 miles from where they live!

It depends on who you were with, what you planned on doing and your history with me...especially in regards to your integrity.  If you were a good kid with a history of being responsible and had a good reason to be 100 miles away without a parent, sure.  If you were a lying little sh**t and wanted to go to a rave across the street I'd say no.

I've been up fairly late in some rather rough areas (with hookers and drug peddlers), and I didn't like it. So no.

if I am ever a parent I would probably be unable to forbid my child from doing anything because I wouldn't accept my own rightful authority to hand down such dictations.

Why? Because I wouldn't be a fascist in regards to my teenagers' freedom in going to emo shows?

As if you and your teenager would agree as to what "emo" is.

No, I wouldn't let my 16 year old do that.  If they really wanted to go somewhere that far or that late, I'd drive them.  I know that in NJ, you don't get your real, can-drive-past-midnight license until you're 18.  I don't know about other states.  I wouldn't be worried about my child driving that late at night in the town we live in, but I wouldn't be comfortable letting a young driver without a full license be driving 100 miles away from me.

Probably not.  The 100 miles away wouldn't bother me so much, but he/she would need to be back sooner than that.

My parents didn't care what I did as long as I told them what I was doing.  I've never had a curfew in my life.

And for everyone who understandably viewed this as an irrelevant answer. His off-site answer was no. Tongue

My parents let me drive at 16 about 1700 miles to Alberta, Canada and the sights in-between with a friend. My bias is that parents tend to be over-protective, particularly these days as they freak out from all that cable TV crime crap sensationalism. Thank heavens mine were not. They let me run free. That is as it should be if you demonstrate that at the end of the day, the end result will probably  not be a crash and burn.

Now of course if I had a kid under-performing in school, he or she would be totally grounded, and the internet access truncated. The tele would be sent to storage.  My priorities would be made crystal clear.

Baby boomers and especially gen-x'ers are way overly protective of their kids.  They got away with everything as kids so they are compensating by being absolutely ridiculous.
