Former U.S. Senator Bob Packwood (R) - Oregon

We were discussing his infamous quorum call holdout when he was in the Senate in my Legislative Process class yesterday so I'm on my "I despise Bob Packwood" kick.

This man is the definition of filth. He was a total RINO and trash on a personal level.

If I remember correctly, disgusting for reasons not having to do with barricading himself in his office to avoid quorum or his ideology.

You didn't find the quorum call controversy disgusting? The man had himself physically carried to the floor like a baby.

More amusing than anything.  A relic from the past.

I'm glad this (R)apist was kicked out of the Senate. He was an embarrassment to our state.

He defeated Wayne Morse, one of this nation's greatest Senators. He's also a rapist and a Republican. Horrible Person.

Wow. I'm actually surprised by these comments (especially Rob's). I expected stuff like "Yeah, he was a total FF on sex stuff besides the assualt."

I didn't expect you guys to actually acknowledge him as a Republican (in a bad way). You guys would hail anyone else with his record as a "sane Republican."

Was he a RINO on anything besides abortion and guns? Because I really don't care very much at all about those issues. I'll admit I'm hardly an expert on his political positions though. Tongue

I was always under the impression that he was a total RINO. He's certainly a social liberal.

I can't speak for Lief, of course, but social issues aren't enough for me to praise Republicans. On most issues that matter, for example, Collins and Snowe are worthless conservatives, despite their opposition to the late-term abortion ban.

So, yeah, no reason at all for me to like Packwood (well, other than the time he moaned about his party's hijacking by "converted Confederates" Tongue). Even if he wasn't a scumbag rapist.

As Rob said, social issues (beyond some civil liberties things) aren't going to swing my view of someone, if they're otherwise horrible on everything else. This is why it pisses me off when Democrats fall in love with "moderate" Republicans who are "moderate" only because they are pro-choice. That's cool, sure, but just like you wouldn't support Hillary Clinton if she was pro-life, I don't think it's that important.

Yeah but he wasn't a RINO just because of one issue.

Whatever the case, I'm still shocked we didn't hear something like "Only prudes would dislike Packwood."
