The first four and Mutiny/desertion.

Of what?

"I do say, Captain Struthers, I am most disappointed that you have decided to desert my 16' Crestliner at this point in the fishing season.  I shall have you put to death by lethal injection.  And we shall serve tea.  Good tea."

I was under the assumption we were just listing things where capital punishment could be used not MUST be used.  If it's a MUST then none of the above of course, but then that would be a pretty silly poll wouldn't it?

The first four, Attempted Murder, Rape, and "assisting suicide without someone's consent" (which sounds like 'murder' to me, maybe it's just poorly worded)

Assuming we have capital punishment at all, then the first 4 crimes.

Otherwise, none of the above, as I strongly oppose the death penalty.

It says with, not without.

None of the above.  I oppose all capital punishment.

That said, I can't think of any crimes I have been more open to allowing capital punishment for than the physical and sexual abuse of children...at least the most egregious cases.

But in the end, I almost think the death penalty is too good for such perpetrators.

Treason and abortion, the first because not killing them is a legitimate threat to society, and the other because of the brutual nature of the crime

Conspiracy to commit acts of terrorism, treason, conspiracy to commit genocide, murder, perfoming & obtaining an abortion, attempted murder, assisting a suicide, and mutiny, cowardice, desertion, or insubordination should be punishable by death, depending of course on each case (particularly in the case of conspiracies to commit crimes).

It was British Army policy in the First World War to shoot people to "cowardice".

If you ask me, the "Lions led by Donkeys" quote is unfair on donkeys.

Deterrence.

Treason, murder and military are all potential valid reasons, but none should automatically carry the sentence.

NOTA, though I do support the death penalty in certain instances of murder.

However, the idea that someone should be executed for conspiring to commit a crime, but never actually committing it, is ridiculous.

Well we could deter speeding by executing speeders too, but my point is that the punishment is far more severe than the crime.

Agreed.  That's why it's called deterrence.
