I'm guessing that your school has chosen 1984 from the syllabus? We did it too Smiley

Positive, especially considering the circumstances of his time.

Positive, of course. But, and I've said this before, his best work can usually be found in his essays.

And as he has done so many times before, Al presents common knowledge as if it were his special contribution.  Thanks, Al.

It should be common knowledge, but it isn't. Though how are you defining "common knowledge"?

Well, anyone who has read his oeuvre, which in my experience is irresistable once you've read any one thing.

So common knowledge within an unfortunately small segment of the population? True enough.

Actually Animal Farm Wink. That's a pretty good book.

Considering we're reading Animal Farm in school at the moment, it sparked off a debate between two of my friends. One who believed that communism, in theory was good, whilst capitalism was good for two things. Religion and Power. Now that man who debated for the Capitalist side cannot debate.

BTW: Positive (aka Freedom Fighter)

Positive, though I prefer Upton Sinclair when it's come to socialist authors. Tongue

Now there is no difference between the two?  Damn.  I've been hearing all these years that socialism and communism were two seperate things, guess all those socialists were wrong.  That isn't suprising Smiley

Orwell had major problems with Soviet communism. There was a huge split that happened when the communists basically took over the Republican side in the Spanish civil war. Wartime conditions favor Stalinistic communism over other forms of leftism.

To extrapolate - notice how everybody else in this thread references only 1984 (easily Orwell's most intellectually lazy, least convincing effort) and Animal Farm (better, and very funny, but basically a children's book, and just as unrepresentative of Orwell's thought and oeuvre)? That's how common that knowledge is...
