Public schools are excuses for indoctrination and child-molesting teachers.

No they're not. Maybe they're expelled for beating up minority students and trying to lynch gays. Maybe if southerners stopped cloaking bigotry in religion and started not mistreating gays/voting to deny them rights I might have some sympathy.

Yeah, living in the least religious state in the U.S., I see a lot of students expelled for being weekly churchgoers.

What complete mis-characterization of a situation are you referring to? Tongue

I have no idea. I posted my speculations of students being expelled for being bigots and acting on it. THat seems like something he'd be referring to.

So what? Am I now supposed to be tolerant of those who are intolerant towards people who are non-christians, marijuana users, gays/bisexuals, think suburbia isn't the best thing invented? Being tolerant to intolerants is working out real well in Europe with their honor killings and fundies.

Public schools. If I was an authoritarian dictator, I'd outlaw private and home schooling, except in exceptional circumstances.

Private, either secular or Catholic. Those fundie private schools though are complete BS and horrible for children. They give all other private schools a bad name. Overall I think it would be obvious that, academically, most private schools score at or above the levels achieved by the best public high schools. Catholic private schools are usually worse than secular ones, in terms of academics unless they are elite college prep Catholic schools, but they still do better than most public schools, especially in comparison to other schools in their area, see the generally better academics in urban Catholic schools as compared to public ones.

I really don't see all the hate for private schools. Yes some can be elitist and some can be run by religious crazies but most offer a quality education for those who are willing to pay for it or actively search it out.

Can you bring up...any actual examples of this happening? Because if this was quite normal we'd be seeing kids expelled left and right.

Side note: Things like blatant displays of homophobia and unwelcome proselytization are not the same as being as a weekly churchgoer.

Given that 75% of the country is Christian, yeah, you would certainly think that schools would be rather ill-attended if every single student who went to church on Sundays was expelled.

You've obviously confused school with church, an unsuprising mistake from a conservative. Anyhow, I love the idea of public schools for a number of reasons. The ones I went to were awesome and are consistently recognized as the best in the region. Unfortunately, there are schools that are not up to par, where private school may be a better alternative. I think this is a really regettable situation, but there's not much parents can do about it.

Public (D) IMO.

Though I went to Catholic school my whole life, I wouldn't consider myself horribly deprived, until at least age 16 anyway...

Public. I personally think that private schools aren't as good because they don't teach the social component of education as well, kids need to learn how to deal with a variety of groups and people and when you are in a school that separates itself from the general public you just can't get the same diversity that exists in the real world. Also I do think it is a little bit elitist, though there are certainly situations where private schooling is the better option.

Nowhere near 75% of the country goes to church every week.  I'd guess more like 25%.  I doubt 75% go to church even on Easter or Christmas.
