This will be the main thread for the Mayoral and GLA elections of next May.

Results of the 2004 Mayoral election by ward (1st prefs. only)...

Bigger version plus an important note

You can tell where Old Southwark and Bermondsey is can't you? Are we able to discuss the Assembly election as well as the Mayoral election?

Mostly; but the Cathedrals and Newington wards are in the constituency as well (as was the Rotherhithe part of Livesey). IIRC Hughes only just led Livingstone constituency-wide; the first sign of the decline his machine seems to have hit recently.

Talking of which, isn't it amazing that Livingstone won Cathedrals and lost East Walworth?

Constituency winners:

Next year, the most vulnerable Labour seat seems likely to be Enfield & Haringey, while the most vulnerable Tory seat is most likely to be Brent & Harrow (unless the LibDems recover back to where they were in 2004/pick an excellent candidate in South West).

In that case (as the constituencies seem to be based on the councils in London) can we ask what the Assembly would have looked like if the election was held on Local Election 2006 day?

By the way, I've found that I have the London Assembly Elections on UK-Elect, would you like me to post a Con / Lab / Lib Dem swingometer (including seats won?)

Candidates so far:

Labour

Ken Livingstone (no introduction needed)

Tories

Boris Johnson (see Livingstone, K.)
Andrew Boff (ex-counciller (first Hillingdon, then Hackney), frequent candidate for higher office including (but not only) Mayor of Hackney (defeated in the usual landslide), was also the defeated Tory candidate in Hornsey & Wood Green in '92).
Victoria Borwick (counciller in Kensignton & Chelsea)
Warwick Lightfoot (see Borwick, V.)

LibDems

Brian Paddick (ex-deputy assistant police commissioner)
Chamali Fernando (a lawyer)
Fiyaz Mughal (Wood Green counciller)

Greens

Siân Berry (frequent candidate and one of them Principle Speakers. On the left of the Green Party)

Respect

Some random Trot. Of course. I think its Lindsey German again.

English Democrats

Garry Bushell (fascist hack)

BNP

Richard "Hello Sailor" Barnbrook (fascist, leader of the BNP group on Barking & Dagenham LBC, Gay porn star)

Independents

John Bird (founder of "Big Issue")
Nick Ferrari (fascist hack, might not run but probably will)

UKIP and various small parties have yet to select candidates. It would, of course, be a major shock if the Tories don't pick Johnson or if the LibDems don't pick Paddick.

He also directed the pornographic film that he starred in. I believe that he has claimed that it wasn't pornography, but "art".

Ho. Ho. Ho.

Ah yes, the Classic Excuse.

Though I must wonder, he's a member of the BNP? In a Larry Craig sort of way it makes sense.

I heard James Whale is being considered as  UKIP candidate, something of a past-it, contrarian, shock-jock hack.. Tends to affect a semi-working-class image (like many people with near-fascistic views cynically do to appear more acceptable), even though he is from Epsom..

I can't really remember much about him now, I used to listen to his talk show because I used to think it was a good use of my time to annoy myself by listening to some ignorant c***.

Another fascist-hack-for-mayor? Bad news for Johnson then; second- preferencing isn't compulsory.

Nick Ferrari always amuses me for his totally silly suggestions that he actually thinks are sensible, e.g. Doubling income tax on human rights lawyers. Its a shame we cannot take his right to free speech and ban him from radio, then he might learn why they are there.

Boff has quite a strong starting base in the Tories - I would give Boris the edge but I'd rather see Boff get the nod a sthe Ken machine really don't have much on him, bar his sexuality. Would Ken's men try and use that against him? Damn right they would.

Is there actually a chance that Johnson won't be the Tory candidate?

Oh yes. We excercise this strange notion of internal party democracy in mayoral candidate selection Wink The race to be the London mayoral candidate has only really begun. Internally, Boris is well liked, but it would be ludicrous to say that Boff doesn't have a chance. I think he'd be a better candidate than Boris and I hope that filters through to the primary voters.

This hasn't been posted in for a while...

The Evening Standard claim they've got a poll putting Johnson at 47%.

News Report (from Conservatives.com) about the primary:

This morning the Conservative Party has announced that Boris Johnson will be their candidate in the May 2008 election for London Mayor. The result follows the conclusion of the first London wide primary run by any political party.

Announcing the result of the primary, Conservative Party Chairman, Caroline Spelman said:

“I am delighted to announce Boris Johnson as the Conservative Mayoral candidate. Running a London wide open primary is a first in British politics. I would like to thank all our excellent candidates for the hard work they have put in. By opening up the process and running open hustings we have given all Londoners the chance to vote on the Conservative appointment and influence the outcome. The Conservative Party can now unite behind Boris to offer the people of London a real alternative to the misgovernment of London that we have seen for the past 8 years.”

David Cameron, Conservative Party Leader, said:

“Boris will be an excellent candidate and I know the Party will unite behind him to remove Ken Livingstone from office. It’s about time that all Londoners had the chance to vote for real change.”

Boris Johnson, Conservative candidate for London Mayor, said:

“I’d like to thank Londoners for giving me this opportunity.

“As I visited all of London’s 32 boroughs in the last few weeks, the message is loud and clear – King Newt’s days are numbered. Across London I’ve met people fed up with paying so much to city hall and getting so little in return.

“The job of the Mayor is simple - to get people to work on time, to ensure people feel safe on the streets, to help people find a place to call home, to celebrate our diversity and to champion our success.

“My determination to lead this city is stronger than ever. After seeing both the good and bad that London has to offer, I am committed to making London greater and standing up for every Londoner that invests so heavily in our city.

“I want to be a Mayor for all Londoners, from Zone 6 to Zone 1. A Mayor that will listen, will learn and will lead.”

Primary Election Data from BBC News

Boris Johnson: 15,661 votes
Victoria Borwick: 1,869
Andrew Boff: 1,674
Warwick Lightfoot: 609
Electorate: approx 3 million
Turnout: 0.66%
