So we all know about the famous John McCain campaign moment in 2008 where he publicly disavowed (on a nationally televised town hall) comments from his own supporters claiming Barack Obama was an Arab and a domestic terrorist, and how it's been looked back upon as a "shining example of friendly politics."

But what if that wasn't the case?

What if John McCain publicly agreed with said comments? How would that have affected the 2008 election?

Would his more moderate supporters and undecideds have fled to Obama? Would the hardliners come around to McCain and stick with him until the end?

Black and progressive/liberal turnout up to the top. Moderates stay home or go for Obama. The birthers were already with McCain.

Didn't the birthers (or at least some of them) abandon McCain after the town hall?

There's zero net upside for McCain to do this.
