I respect the guy. He is very extreme ideologically, but he is also very principled. He is a rare breed of a hard-right Republican who hasn't sold out to Trump. He opposed overturning the 2020 election results and supported DeSantis in the 2024 primary. Whenever there is a vote that passed the House overwhelmingly but not unanimously, Massie is usually one of the few "no" votes. He is completely unafraid of going against basically everybody else in congress, or even siding with Democrats over his fellow Republicans when he deems appropriate. He stays consistent to his libertarian-style ideology no matter which way the winds blow. Unlike some of the hard-right Trumpers (MTG, Boebert, Gaetz, etc), he doesn't seem to be in congress to intentionally make media spectacles, he just seems to genuinely hold and respectfully fight for his out-there views.

Honestly, depends on the day and the particular vote. Sometimes he pisses me off, sometimes I stand in "wow you're bold" admiration, and occasionally I genuinely approve. It all balances out to FF for being principled. I usually disagree with his positions, but on some foreign policy issues and protecting small farmers, he's been quite bipartisan. And on a personal level, super cool. Massie is an engineer with multiple patents to his name who lives off the grid. While he opposes the kind of climate policy we need, he's more committed to environmentalism on a personal level than most pro-GND types are.

Being principled is only noble if your principles are themselves noble.

You might be able to respect some of his behavior if he weren't such a massive asshole.

If someone walked into congress and punched Thomas Massie in the face he’d still vote against arresting them.
This was pretty funny

No, it's noble no matter what; it's just that that nobility doesn't do much good if it's not in the service of or at least in communication with other virtues, which is why I voted HP.

Always net HP, but the sheer amount or lack thereof of such a feeling depends on the day.

https://thehill.com/homenews/house/4596862-massie-backs-greene-effort-to-oust-speaker-johnson/
Massie has joined MTG's push to vacate Mike Johnson. Some Democrats have expressed willingness to bail out Johnson, so the motion to vacate may fail on the floor even if Johnson loses more Republican votes. What's notable is that both Massie and MTG supported McCarthy on all of his speaker votes.

https://www.govtrack.us/congress/votes#_
In other Massie news, he went on a spree of lonely no votes throughout yesterday and today. There were multiple votes relating to Israel/Iran in which overwhelmingly passed the House. Massie was the only Republican to oppose them, alongside a small handful of Democrats.

The AIPAC should primary him and put a normier Covington area republican in his seat, but I prefer him to MTG style hard-liners.
I don't think engineers should be seen as good for politics.

"Wow, so principled and noble!", I say, as hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians die in defence of freedom and democracy while the principled, noble congressman sits in Washington DC in safety.

No need to exaggerate - the war in Ukraine is about borders, not freedom or democracy. Ukraine typically ranks very poorly on both freedom and democracy in every major index, albeit ahead of Russia.

Ukraine is a flawed democracy with free and fair elections and basic freedoms, which has been rapidly improving ever since it left Russia's grip in the 2010s. Russia is an authoritarian state where opposition figures are jailed and murdered, and it is attempting to impose the same system on Ukraine.

Ukraine stands as a vanguard of freedom and democracy.

Here, he had a very interesting interview with Tucker Carlson. Some interesting insights and anedotes about working in congress, his relationships with other members, and the role AIPAC plays in influencing Republican congresspeople. He also talked about his off the grid lifestyle and some of his life experiences, which was super cool.

This. I honestly think he's worse than Marjorie Taylor Greene - at least the latter is entertaining.

Comparing the two, Massie is FAR less of a Trump simp (as I said he opposed the 2020 election challenges and endorsed DeSantis in 2024, and he has publicly criticized Trump and opposed his positions many times). Massie is also far more responsible when it comes to his rhetoric. While he says stupid things sometimes, it's nowhere near to the extent that MTG does. Massie is far more respectful and demonizes his opponents far less. Massie is far more policy focused and prefers to talk about his work on the issues he cares about (whether his position lines line up with the majority of his party or not) rather than engage in partisan attacks. Unlike MTG, Massie is pro-weed (he voted against the MORE act, but he made clear in public statements that only voted against that bill because it also included a bunch of federal regulation on cannabis which he disliked, he wanted a clean legalization bill instead. He has voted for every other piece of pro-cannabis legislation that has come up in the house.) So why do you see Massie as worse, is it because he's more isolationist?

I appreciate his stance against the Hunter Biden conviction. While Hunter Biden is by no means a good person, use of illegal drugs should not automatically revoke 2nd amendment rights.
