Feeling the need to change the trajectory, Biden goes bold and gives a speech endorsing M4A. Beside him are some leftist figures, the likes of Bernie Sanders, Warren and AOC.

What happens now?

If he puts AOC next to him, that would be a mistake and would associate him with the unpopularity of the Squad. I think he could definitely excite some people by announcing support for M4A, but he shouldn't associate it with them, but rather with himself.

I'm not sure if he would get any significant boost among progressive/leftist voters immediately, given that they can see his track record on this issue over the past 15 years or so and conclude that he is not to be trusted to promote this particular policy.

Biden would get better results vehemently defending the most popular parts of Obamacare and telling young people that if Trump got his way they'd lose their ability to use their parent's insurance.

It would probably have no effect. I'm sure the progressives that don't currently support him or are on the fence about him would balk at the move and call it opportunistic, even I would probably feel that way and I support Biden. I don't think Independents/Biden leaners would particularly care.

It's too late at this point to make any fundemental policy changes. When he was running in 2019 Biden sold himself as a boring caretaker President rather than a bold vision. That's how he was percieved by the voters and how he will be in 2024.

It would hurt him.

- Any M4A legislation is DOA in the House (and probably the Senate too).

- Regardless of how likely it is to pass, it would scare the crap out of the markets at a time when Biden needs the economy to continue to trend in the right direction.

- It would make moderates a lot more skeptical to support him.

- Progressives wouldn't give him any credit.
