An update on this because Twitter is not a reputable source:

https://greekreporter.com/2023/10/20/greek-orthodox-church-st-porphyrios-gaza-bombed/

The church was sadly hit, this source is reporting 2 dead and multiple people trapped under the rubble. About 50 people were in the church at the time it was hit. It is an absolute tragedy, but 100s are not dead or injured.

If we've learned anything from the last two days, we need to stop amplifying unverified reports. Tragedies like this are going to happen and its absolutely devastating, both because of the lives lost and the cultural significance being destroyed. But some of the posts in this thread are just gossip at this point.

Support for sending weapons to Israel not as high as I expected for GOP voters
Amazing dissonance between the imperial uniparty (and Atlas, which is bizarrely hawkish relative to the general population) and what voters actually want. And all of the "no" voters will still line up like cattle to support one demented murderer or the other (or the antivax crank who is equally pro-apartheid) next year.

Netanyahu is weak and pathetic for saying he needed Hamas and ignoring all the warnings about Hamas attacking.

That poll is still misleading, as that poll literally showed 57% of young voters thought Israel's response was justified.

I mean even I think the response is partially justified. My point is that boomers support Israel no matter what they do because of religion and sympathy but that isn't going to work with younger people.

Actually if you look at the crosstabs they have one of following news closely vs not following closely and these were the results:

Following news closely: 59% Fully Justified 21% Partially Justified 8% Not Justified

Not Following Closely: 28% Fully Justified 19% Partially Justified 9% Not Justified

Not sure if it has been mentioned in this thread, but there was some news on the bombing of the St. Porphyrios Church posted in the Facebook group of an Orthodox charity working with them:

Al Jeezera has uped the reported deaths to 8 in their live feed.

Not 150-200. Like I said, it's still a tragedy. We dont need to spread rumors as fact.

It will probably rise sadly. But its Al Jeezera reporting this, not The Times of Israel. There is 0 reason to think they're covering for Israel.

Escalation of settler violence in the West Bank.

Horrible... very good reason for Netanyahu to dump the far right parties and form a Centrist "United Front Government". Doubtful he will do so since his political career would likely be over as soon as the initial Israel presumed Invasion of Gaza has culminated with a much weakened Hamas in Gaza, with Israel having likely little appetite for a full-blown and long term occupation, with all that would entail.

Regardless of Hamas' motives they own their choice to unleash an horrific terrorist assault against primarily civilian targets, as well as what could be argued were legitimate military targets from an elected Government with a political and military wing, such as the (10) Israeli Military Bases in Southern Israel which were overrun (Regardless of what appear to have been in some cases of IDF members killed while they were sleeping in their underwear).

Regardless of Hamas' actions against Israeli civilians, the Israeli military and the Israeli Government also has a responsibility to ensure that their actions do not cause massive suffering of the civilian population in Gaza.

Alas, even before the much "anticipated" Israeli Invasion has begun, we have already seen massive suffering among the population of Gaza, and these civilian casualties will likely to continue to increase astronomically.

Still, what images of the suffering, the dying, bombed out buildings, will we actually see from Gaza, especially now that internet and external communications are virtually shut down?

I don't think they are covering, but the fog of war is thick and it's hard to get exact numbers quickly. Either way, I hope that Al Jazeera is indeed accurate and the death toll is far lower than the contacts in the parish estimated.

Meanwhile, sounds like Iranian aligned formations are increasing the pressure throughout the region...

Yemen stood out to me today as a new front, but appears that attacks on US military facilities are heating up as well.

Quote
U.S. forces in the Middle East have come under threat by attack drones at least five times in three days and on Thursday intercepted numerous weapons launched by militants in Yemen, the Pentagon said, a new development amid fears that the war between Israel and Hamas could engulf the surrounding region.

The incidents have involved U.S. troops in Iraq and Syria and aboard a Navy destroyer in the Red Sea, said Brig. Gen. Patrick Ryder, a Pentagon spokesman. Speaking at a news conference, he said the spate of action entailed three attack drones targeting U.S. military positions in Iraq on Tuesday, two drones zeroing in on a garrison in Syria on Wednesday, and the downing by personnel on the USS Carney of cruise missiles and drones launched by Iranian-backed fighters, possibly aimed at Israel.

Quote
Coalition personnel suffered what Ryder said were minor injuries in the attacks targeting Iraq and Syria. In a separate incident, U.S. personnel took shelter at Ain Al-Asad air base in western Iraq on Wednesday after an early-warning alert system sounded. No drone struck the base then, Ryder said, but a contractor working on the base died after suffering cardiac arrest amid the commotion.

The distance from Yemen to Israel is not a hop-skip-and-a-jump. Can not be a "crude" type of missile, like those launched from Gaza into Israel.
These must have been medium-range missiles, which are much more sophisticated in nature. I smell Iran involved with this.

Since the hospital incident where Islamic Jihad hit a Hospital car park, there are no more live streams from Gaza for some reason. Hamas may not have appreciated the evidence gathering nature of the footage.

YouTube has been flooded with false cams that are pre-recorded.

With Al-Jazeera flipping anti-Israeli, there is simply not that many independent news channels to find information from.

Al Jazeera English

I did find a live GIS system which updates action as it happens.

https://israelpalestine.liveuamap.com/en/2023/20-october-israeli-army-says-it-struck-more-than-100-targets

The Houthi’s are getting keen from Yemen which, from Israel, is about 2,200km South South-East as the crow flies.

Despite their cool name, the Houthi’s show lack of experience or sheer stupidity to fire a cruise missile this far. At US$6.5M each, they wasted $20M on yesterday’s attack.

USS Carney shot them down as they were travelling north on their way to Israel.

Same poll asking respondents' thoughts on humanitarian aid for Palestinians in Gaza

Both this and the Israeli support poll are... less partisan than I thought they'd be.

I think it's the public impact of the Hospital issue.

Of course. Iran is behind all of this.

Iran is effectively operating military units in half the countries in the region.

Who does all this violence and incitement serve?

Not Syria, not Lebanon, not Egypt, not Jordan, certainly not Palestine.

Iran is the real winner in all this, as a destabilized middle east paves their path to a regional caliphate.

Boy, I really need to rewatch that West Wing arc where Martin Sheen manages to solve the entire Middle East conflict within the span of four 45-minute episodes. Tongue

IIRC it required the open-ended deployment of a massive US-led peacekeeping force. I bet that would go over well with voters in the real world.
