Newsom is not going to be the backup nominee in 2024. Zero chance.

Can he be the nominee in 2028? Sure. But he'll lose the general election quite badly. California has a bad image in the rest of the country. Its somewhat unfair but California is known as a high tax and ultra woke state with lots of homeless people and expensive homes.

In this day and age of political polarization, I’d be extremely surprised if it has a non-negligible impact on the election which states the candidates are from, unless it is a favourite son from a crucial swing state.

GAVIN makes another pivot to the center:

His CPUC appointees don't care about any sort of fiscal responsibility at PG&E.

I believe that Gavin is making a pivot ahead of a presidential run, but that's for 2028. He is not running against Biden.

Making overtly hostile gestures to a crucial part of the Democratic base won't make him more appealing in a primary. This isn't 1992.

Excited to see him explain in a Democratic primary debate why he vetoed an insulin price cap which Republicans unanimously supported!

Newsom would be an awful candidate. Democrats can tout whatever zingers he threw at Hannity as evidence of him being able to hold his own while defending his record, but the fact is he's still the Governor of California, where the cost of living is astronomical and people are leaving in droves. He certainly doesn't have a list of accomplishments that have improved life in the state, or perhaps more importantly the image of the state. His electric car mandate alone would probably be enough to sink him.

Yeah, it would even be too late for making a serious play. We're already in October and this isn't the 1968 election where you can jump in so late. However, I could see him as possible "emergency candidate" in the possible but very unlikely scenario Biden would dropout in the summer for health reasons. At least I'd feel much better with him than with Kamala. He's a much stronger candidate because a better messager and political operator.

Newsom Veto Watch

Newsom vetoes bill that would have decriminalized psychedelic mushrooms

California governor vetoes bill that would have banned caste discrimination

Also vetoes the "Social Housing Act":

We're starting to see Newsom build a platform appealing to donors and independents. Money will not be a problem for this campaign.

Forget the primary, he's not appealing in the general. The last thing this country needs is another billionaire apologist. I would not vote for  Newsom in the general against any concievable opponent, and would strongly considered refusing to vote for any candidate from a party that would nominate him.

All of which is likely irrelevant, as a parody like Newsom (billionaire buddy, winery owner from CA) will not be winning a national election, no matter how I vote.

Nevada Democratic Primary ballot finalized:

Dem primary

Armando "Mando" Perez-Serrato
Brent Foutz
Marianne Williamson
Stephen Lyons
Joe Biden
Jason Palmer
Donald Picard
Stephen Leon
John Haywood
Gabriel Cornejo
Mark Prascak
Superpayaseria Crystalroc
Frankie Lozada

Funny that I don't see the name Gavin Newsom on here...You'd think if he wanted to run for President he'd file in the state adjacent to CA that any Californian would expect to win.

Normal governor behavior, nothing to see here:

Newsom is preparing himself to handle foreign policy issues on Day 1.

Heatcharger bringing up Newsom's vacation plans to distract from the fact that every week he's not running it gets harder for him to get in. Biden camp puts in strong fundraising results, most of which is usable in the primary if necessary, and would be ready to nuke anyone trying to seriously challenge him if they were foolish enough to try.

Anyway, filing deadlines for South Carolina and Alabama are Nov 10th, 3 weeks from today. Tick tock. He's already missed Nevada and what sort of Californian running for President skips Nevada? (Maybe it's because he isn't running for President).

Just put heatcharger on ignore. This trolling act he decided to put on is getting stale - which isn't to say it was cute or funny in the first place.

Yeah he’s running for Pres in 4 years and will kick his campaign off by announcing his VP will be a Black woman.

Really quickly: you know who else is going to Israel right now?

Governor Kathy Hochul, D-NY.

Is she also running for President? Or maybe, just maybe, this IS an ordinary thing governors do?

Governor Kathy Hochul, D-NY.

Hochul is the governor for 1.6 million Jews, literally more Jews than in California (or Tel Aviv and Jerusalem combined).

Is it? Governors typically make international trips for trade missions, not right after a major terrorist attack. Maybe we can compile some data on governor travel, but the only other governor I can think of who's recently visited another country is Ron DeSantis. He's technically running for president.

Biden has lower electability than some democrats(it's a bit too late for them to be considered, but I'll concede that much), but this guy certainly isn't one of them lol. He's a stereotypical "elitist liberal" that Republican Strategists would have dreamed up in a lab

Newsom is the kind of guy that Republicans would suggest that Democrats run. When push comes to shove they would never actually vote for him--of course. He has worse standing on the left than Biden does.

He would lose the popular vote.

This, and as I've said before he's the face of everything wrong with not only California, but the West Coast in general.

15 years ago a black community organizer named Barack Hussein Obama took the nation by storm. When people see you as a leader it doesn’t matter where you come from.

It’s ironic progressives are concern trolling about being painted as “coastal liberal elites”. This same type of conservative thinking was pushed by Hillary 2008 and Hillary 2016 against their opponents. Now obviously, progressives have ideological issues with Newsom. The good news for Democrats is these same people will, no matter what, fill out their ballots for Gavin when the time comes.

To the contrary of what my Democrat friends here think, Newsom would be an extremely difficult candidate for Republicans to beat.
