Actually kicking McCarthy out would make history. I believe there has been only one previous motion to vacate (in 1910), and it failed.

And Uncle Joe put that 1910 motion to vacate forward against himself as a way of daring his intraparty GOP critics to put up or shut up.

Joe Cannon had guts, if nothing else.

Attendance on roll call is 218 Republicans, 207 Dems. So Dems missing 5 not 4, and GOP missing 3 not 2.

6 defections is therefore probably the magic number, barring nobody voting present.

Yeah.

Fun side business is that this motion to table is a couple votes harder for McCarthy than the actual vote to vacate the chair: a tie here loses for him and Spartz is also voting “No” on both the tabling and the vacation.

This isn't the vote for vacating the chair though, maybe someone is expected to come back?

Everyone ready to hear a bunch of phones go off in the chamber in about five minutes with the emergency alert test
That’s tomorrow!

Shame, it could have been very funny if the timing worked out right.

Imagine that chorus of noise.

Apple's DING!

Android's two-tone bells.

That Kim-Possible Kimmunicator jingle.

The current Dean of the House is Hal Rogers, who has been in the House for 42 years. He cast 23 votes for speaker between 1981 and 2022 (21 start of term ballots and 2 mid-term). It's feasible he could cast another 23 in 2023 alone.

I understand why Peltola is absent, but why on earth did the other four Democrats decide to skip out on this?

So Pelosi and Peltola are absent for understandable reasons. Bush, Wilson (FL), and Sykes are the ones who aren’t there for some reason.

Pelosi is apparently flying in right now. Bush has COVID. No idea about Wilson or Sykes.

This would have been an absolutely classic day for the House to have physical voting lobbies.

Nancy Mace? Wouldn't have guessed that.

Mace talks about of both sides of her mouth. She tries to appear moderate while voting mostly with the far right.

And it's Official.

Process starts and with 11 GOP votes that's a tall order for McCarthy.

For reasons far beyond mere mortal comprehension, she's said she's voting nay on both the motion to table and the actual resolution.

So what’s the ultimate outcome here? McCarthy’s goose seems pretty much cooked from what I can see, so who ends up Speaker? Scalise?

I don't see a guy who is fighting blood cancer wanting to take a big public facing job right now. PQG would know better than the rest of us how serious myeloma is (or even how to pronounce it), but I generally assume "under cancer treatment" is rough unless assured otherwise by people who know what they're talking about.

Gaetz has said he'd be fine with current GOP #3 Tom Emmer, Emmer has said he doesn't want it (knowing it's a poisoned chalice and he'd be as screwed as McCarthy is now). Emmer might be forced into it given he is broadly popular over the caucus and few other people are, but he knows as well as anyone else the eventual fate of a GOP Speaker is to be chased out by his conference and probably doesn't want that for himself.

To paraphrase the late Norm MacDonald, I actually didn’t even know he was sick. Almost def a no-go, this is gonna be chaos.

She said she’s pissed McCarthy has never allowed some of her more moderate stuff on abortion and guns get any discussion.
