X, formerly Twitter, will begin a test that charges new users $1 annually in order to "post & interact with other posts," the company said in a recent post.

The social media platform said Tuesday evening the move is part of its efforts to combat spam and bot activity. The annual subscription is part of a program the company is calling "Not A Bot," and will be first tested in New Zealand and the Philippines.

If you're dumb enough to spend money on Twitter then you deserve to be separated from your one dollar.

He's not doing it for the money directly, I think he's doing it to get everyone's credit cards on file so he can later introduce microtransactions and make them frictionless.

Boost this Tweet for the next 3 hours! $1 please!

Twitter additcts would eat it up.

Maybe also to ease the transition of X becoming some kind of payment app which is his dream apparently.

Exactly. Musk saw value in Twitter's network, not the platform that complements it. That's why he has been scrapping non-essential pieces of that platform and purging the organization that maintains it. Building a database of payment information will ease that network into what comes next. There's a clear vision behind this transformation.

Musk might think he has some kind of vision, for Twitter it’s more a free speech for deplorables site that he got in way over his head and needs to try and make it profitable since he way overpaid.

Tesla is starting to crack, SpaceX only exists due to the government subsidies. He built his empire on people thinking he’s a genius when he’s actually a rich moron.

In 2019, Tesla was $12 a share.

In 2023, Tesla is $212 a share.

It takes 6 months to get one in Australia as they are sold out.

Musk has no idea what he’s doing nor does he have even the most basic understanding of either what he bought (for far more than it was worth) or what its value was.  Worst of all, he has no more interest in learning.  The man is clearly flailing around in truly imbecilic fashion as he desperately tries to convince people he has even the faintest semblance of a clue how to turn this dumpster fire around.     At this point, he’s just trying to get enough return on investment to declare victory and leave before it eventually gets sold for much less than he paid for it or scrapped for parts.  Unfortunately for Musk, it’s unlikely he’d break even if he knew what he was doing given how badly he overpaid and given that he has so little understanding of Twitter that he’s managed to make almost every conceivable mistake since taking it over…well…

Earnings are starting to decrease and Musk just threw a tantrum on an earnings call. The stupid truck isn’t going to sell as well as he thought either. He does have a great cult around his overpriced cars that will lock you in and light you on fire though.

Tesla has a market cap of USD $700 Billion.

Need to put things in perspective.

I don't agree with this, because turning it into a paid, worse version of 4Chan is counter-productive to the goal of turning it into a payment system.

Their goal seems closer to live media with easy transactions for everything from content access to sports betting. Yaccarino has said outright that they want to take the place in the public consciousness once occupied by television. That's an ambitious goal, but it's one that makes sense of Musk's purchase.

I think the content moderation issue comes down to Musk eliminating most of the trust and safety team practically overnight because he saw them as a threat to his control of the organization. It's clearly a problem for the business that he's still figuring out how to fulfill that team's former functions, but it's interesting how few people outside of media have stepped away from the platform. Most politicians and NGOs are still there. It's still the place to put out a press release or public statement if you're not running your own media organization.

I mean, I guess it’s ambitious in the same way that trying to make competitive YoYo leagues replace social media is an ambitious goal.  Twitter is not going to replace television.  And at this right, it’s far from clear that they’ll even still be a major social media site 3-5 years from now.

However, it is also an idiotic one that would only ever be attempted by someone who fundamentally doesn’t understand what Twitter is, why people used it, and where its financial value was.  Even if you believe that Musk bought it for this reason, that’s still functionally an admission that he’s a moron who wildly overpaid for a product he didn’t understand in the least.

Nobody on this forum is using X less than before the Musk purchase. The app has gotten better at delivering content users want to see, making it more engaging than ever.

What a compelling argument Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

Algorithm-based feeds work. If you think I’m wrong, you’ll have to explain why X, Instagram and TikTok get more popular every year.  Ask product designers at YouTube if they think maximizing engagement isn’t essential to their business model built on advertising.

Powerful brands like the NFL understand the value of X.

None are in risk of dying or even becoming zombies like MySpace despite some clickbaity titles, but they are definitely past their peaks.

I have stopped using the mobile app and am only using the browser version where I can use an adblocker. This is a must, since most advertisers there are now crypto schemers and straight-up scammers.

As Insider reports, marketing consultancy Ebiquity found that the vast majority of the biggest spenders have stopped advertising on X following Musk's ill-fated takeover last year.

That seems to contradict Musk's and CEO Linda Yaccarino's recent promises that all is well and that most of the advertisers have since returned.

According to the marketing firm's data, only two of Ebiquity's clients bought ads on X last month, a massive drop from 31 brands in September 2022. The consultancy works with 70 out of 100 top-spending advertisers, per Insider, including the likes of Google, Walmart, and General Motors.

Scammers posing as customer service agents on X as companies leave platform
Quote
Since X, formerly Twitter, changed its terms of service, fewer companies are offering customer service via the platform. Scammers are taking advantage of that by posing as companies’ customer services and actively approaching customers who have questions, RTL Nieuws reports.
