In the Young Thug trial here in Atlanta, jury selection took almost 10 months.

This is why I think the odds this comes down a plea agreement is very high. Like 65%. Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't Trump have to be there everyday during jury selection? Based on what I've seen, he looks miserable, no way he can take 2 months of this, let alone 10. I think he'll try and plea to a misdemeanor count of falsifying business records. Good change Bragg will accept an agreement because if the trial goes forward and Trump is either acquitted or case is overturned on appeal, that would be the end of Bragg's career. With this, he can still hang his hat on a conviction, even if it's not a felony.

My udnerstanding is that he does have to be there every day. I don't know about a plea deal though.

In some ways, it would be surprising if they get a single juror off of the original 96 for this sort of trial so I don't think it is particularly significant.

You are exaggerating how difficult it is. Yes, it is difficult to find a fair jury, but it is not some impossible thing, and there have been cases in the past that are just as (or more) high profile.

I believe that in any criminal trial, the defendant must be present every day but can petition the court to be excused for some reason (but the prosecution can object to this).  Our resident lawyers can likely provide more details on this.

He just whined about this on camera. (SCOTUS arguments)

Also something about not being able to go to his son's graduation.

He raised that request, and Merchan said he'd rule on it when it was closer to the graduation.

Yeah, he's trying to do that rn in fact:

The comment about Barron's graduation made me want to vomit. We wouldn't be in this position if he didn't cheat on his mom with a pornstar.

Good, there's no reason he needs to be at the SCOTUS argument. Son's graduation I might personally be more sympathetic towards.

I don't necessarily see a problem with him attending his son's graduation if we're still in jury selection by that point.

I don't think he even genuinely cares about Barron's graduation. It's just a very convenient excuse.

Trump is the first Republican or Democrat presumptive nominee to go on trial.

I spoke too soon: Blanche says that the campaign has taken pains to schedule events on Wednesdays and asks Merchan if Trump be excused from any hearings that take place on Wednesdays, when the jury is in recess. Merchan says he will take this into consideration.

No? Enough. If a regular defendant would have to be there, so does he. Who cares if your campaign events are on Wednesdays? You don't get to not show up because of that.

Merchan's announced schedule is to hold the trial four days a week, excluding Wednesdays, although he's said if they fall behind they'll start doing Wednesdays as well.

According to news reports, over half of the jury pool has already been dismissed on the impartiality question, when 40% was the expected number . This case might die on appeal

Why would jury selection taking longer than expected be an issue on appeal?

Furthermore they were expected to take a longtime. How long they take has zero to do with the appeal.

There may some correlation between why jury selection is so hard and issues which will arise on appeal.  But that's a different matter.

Frankly I think the jury issues will be during the trial. I would be shocked if we don't see at least two jurors replaced by alternates because they lied during this process or are blabbing. But that would be an issue in any high profile trial like this.

If he is excused for that, he'll hold a rally (or fundraiser) the same day.

Takes a few days before your body will let you start going to sleep earlier. Maybe he'll get there!
