Do you think that the USA joining the EU would be good for the residents of the USA, the EU, and the world at large? Why or why not?

I would be in favor of freedom of movement and some more regulatory alignment between the EU and US, but membership? I think not.

I don't think it would work, but it would morbidly interesting if the world changed in a way that something like this actually became possible.

When the filibuster eventually crumbles about a century from now, Mitch McConnell will somehow cause this so that political progress in America can once again be frustrated by chambers with ridiculously outsized influence. The US Senate has nothing on the Walloon Parliament.

The fact the US and the EU are separated by an ocean would make having a free travel zone less beneficial economically. You're already shipping things between the US and Europe by air or sea, so eliminating land border checks wouldn't be that beneficial for the US. Not to mention, the US would/should only accept membership if it got an opt-out of having to adopt the Euro, like the UK had.

Not that I wouldn't support it, but what motivation is there for any country in Europe to have the United States join the European Union?

I'd say it would be beneficial for Americans and Europeans (and Canadians for that matter) to live and work in any of our countries without getting a work visa first. That's pretty much as far as I would go though.

The US doesn't meet the accession criteria, nor does it want to.

Extremely bad idea. That would completely change the nature and character of the US and make Americans a minority in their own country. It is the United States of America, not the United States of the Northern Hemisphere.

The EU is an international organization with the members remaining sovereign states, the US is a nation state even if it's an unusual one.

As much as I like many of the policies in European countries, it just doesn't make sense to have the US join the European Union.

You'd prefer if the US joined the PRC.

The idea is not a merger of countries but a North Atlantic Economic Union. The problem is that one country, the US would have a majority of the economic activity, make it top heavy. One gets closer to the same place by the US and EU over time reducing trade barriers.

The idea of the dollar and the Euro currencies merging is interesting, but would force a common monetary policy, which might be unpopular as nations have different ideas as to how to balance employment, growth, inflation, interest rates, and the like.

It could never work for a long list of reasons for foremost for me is that the US would dwarf the rest of the union in economic power, like the current situation with Germany times a hundred.

I mean, on a fundamental level, I think it would be a good idea to head toward some kind of political union of all advanced democracies. The issue is that both the EU and the US have a lot of sh*t to sort out (including whether or not they're going to remain advanced democracies, which is far from a given right now), and if they don't sort them out, bringing them into union would probably bring out the worst tendencies in both of them. So no thanks.

I would be in favor of a 100%, both ways, free trade agreement.  We can increase defensive treaties and make travel and work easier between countries too.

No to a shared currency and certainly no to giving up any internal power to an international organization.

As long as it implements necessary democratic reforms, the EU should definitely considering the USA for EU accession: perhaps by 2048 it may be allowed to reach Potential Candidate status (this will be through the Eu's fast track procedure, obviously).

Yes, a divided Europe is easier for Trumpoids to dominate. We have long known you think this.

No I don't want any European court overturning U.S. laws.
