If the 9/11 tweets are real and he really claimed his mom died in 9/11, that I think should be a deal breaker for a lot of NY GOPers. Claiming to lose people on 9/11 in a district where I’m sure large amounts of victims worked probably will piss off a lot of people.

I think the claiming to be Jewish lie was the most politically damaging one in this particular district, but the 9/11 claims are also extremely damaging across the political spectrum. At this point it's obvious he'd get like 20% of the vote in a re-run of the NY-03 election held tomorrow, and of course he'd lose the Republican primary to begin with if they held one.

It is interesting that he is being kept around as a McCarthy vote for Speaker when his original campaign was decidedly on the far-right wing of the party.

Technically this means he's not Latino. If his father was born in Brazil then he is Afro-Lusitanic, not Afro-Latino and therefore Santos is not Latino, but Lusitanic. And his claim is that both of his parents were born in Brazil so I don't think there is any Latino heritage on his mother's side either. Granted, Santos probably didn't know the difference between Latino and Lusitanic like most people do, he still was pushing another inaccuracy for identity politics.

Brazil is in Latin America and the demonym Latino is often used to refer to any nation within Latin America. The connection is the Romance languages, but culture wise there is a disconnect between Brazil and other Latin American nations. Most Brazilians don't consider themselves Latino. Haiti is part of Latin America too, but I think most people would be skeptical to call Haitians Latino.
