J.B McCuskey has dropped out of the Governor's race, and will run for Attorney General instead.

Quote
Two-term state Auditor J.B. McCuskey, who was competing in a crowded field for governor, has pivoted to the attorney general’s race instead.

McCuskey said on MetroNews’ “Talkline” that he had thought the timing was right to run for governor, but he soon realized he had entered a crowded, competitive field. “I was surrounded by candidates who were going to have significantly more resources than I did,” he said.

So he concluded that his executive branch tenure and legal background would be a better fit right now in the attorney general’s race. The attorney general is West Virginia government’s top lawyer, representing state agencies in court and taking the lead on lawsuits instigated by the state.

McCuskey, a former delegate from Kanawha County, has served as state auditor since 2017 and has said he believes in filling no more than two terms.

“My experience as the auditor and in the legal community makes a great fit for me to continue to serve in West Virginia as the attorney general,” McCuskey, a Republican, said on “Talkline.”

The attorney general’s race already has two Republican candidates in the primary. state senators Ryan Weld and Mike Stuart.

McCuskey has already drawn fire from at least one of his primary opponents on social media.

This is still a Safe Republican race in my opinion, but Democrats will have a noteworthy candidate, which is never a bad thing:

How high do you think he could get. It would be nice to see a competitive race in West Virginia.

Ben Salango got 30% in 2020. He was also a credible candidate, but was running against a popular incumbent. Given this is an open seat race, maybe Williams could get 35% or so? I don’t see a Democrat getting much higher than that, though (Manchin probably gets around 40% in his re-election bid, but that’s probably where his ceiling is).

So it is either a forlorn hope of re-election or retirement for him, then.

He did not preclude either running for reelection or for POTUS, nor did he rule out running as a Pub for either office.

I think he has.

If Trump doesn't wade in to endorse Morrisey, this could be pivotal.

I suppose that the Capito dynasty will reign on, although I'm eagerly awaiting a Trump endorsement to see if that will make a difference.

We could end up seeing the Moore/Capito family hold a Senate seat, a House seat, and the Governor's mansion next year.

Is Moore Capito a MAGA candidate or more of a traditional conservative? His mother obviously is one of the lesser offensive senators who's still willing to legislate in a serious manner.

Anyways it should be noted the WV governorship is one of the least powerful. Vetoes can be overriden by simple majority.

Fairly moderate conservative.. he has some union backing for his run (United Mine Workers of America).

His cousin Riley Moore, who's running in the 2nd district, is a full on Vance type.

If Justice is for him, then what moral concept is against him?

The Humanist Report did a funny segment about just how bizarre this primary has gotten. If victory in the GOP primary wasn't tantamount to election in West Virginia, I'd find it entertaining.

We're getting that idiot Miller's ads here. Spending all that money for literally zero votes.

I know Trump endorsed Jim Justice for Senate, but did he endorse for any of the other down ballot races?

Seemingly just a repeated endorsement of Justice.

I guess he doesn't like losers. Many 2018 losers didn't receive another endorsement from him (like Barletta or Rosendale) as well. Of course he blames only them for the defeat, but solely wants to take credit for winning candidates.
