I'm going with 4. I bet whoever follows Truss (presumably Hunt) is gone within a week or two to a designated caretaker.

There is no such thing as a "caretaker PM" in the (unwritten, but still real) UK constitution.

Whenever it happens, I expect Truss to nominally remain PM until a full time successor takes over.

Didn't the UK already have a "caretaker PM" in 2022, his name being Boris Johnson?

Yes, but not formally speaking - that's my point.

Just as the UK Labour party has never officially had "acting" leaders - Beckett and Harman count as full-fat leaders in the party's records despite their short (and unelected) stints in the job.

But isn't the British constitution basically "make it up as you go along"? So you could just introduce a caretaker PM.

Will go with 3.

I wish they would trash the GBP a bit more though. Stuff out of the UK has always been expensive.

It all depends on the highly unlikely chance of whether whoever replaces Truss can unify the Tories behind them, and be able to present an agenda that the Conservatives in Parliament can agree on. Quite frankly I don't see anyone as yet in the running who could do anything like that, which makes me think it's possible that an election could be held this year even if it is unlikely.
