I should probably sleep soon but here is my proposal on how to change it. My main issue with this bill is that the bill is centered on the parent, not the child and after the child turns eighteen, both the parents and the child are cut loose from the two grand.

I propose to replace this with a "baby bonds" program like the one introduced by Senator Booker a few years ago. So essentially, a baby bonds program would create a savings account which the government would invest each month/year in until they turn eighteen, where they would spend it on allowable uses like buying a house, paying for education, or starting a business, among other things.

I would not be opposed to my idea of a baby bonds program working in conjunction with a CUBI as something small like $200 per month would hypothetically mean that someone born after the passage of this could pay for their college education if they go to a public school presuming tuition is $8000 and still have eleven grand left to spend on other things.

My computer is nearly dead so I am posting this right now but I'll work on an amendment after people give feedback to my proposal.

Personally I think the President should veto this. This is about principle, I don't care who the "winning side" is. My point is that at least half of the Senate should have voted on this. Yes, I know I've not voted on this. So I'm i'm part of the guilty eleven. But come on, not having even half (bloody HALF, FFS!) of the senate vote makes any legislation passed in this manner a farce. Senators we can all do better. Hats off to those who showed up and voted.

I sympathize with Senator Muad'dib and the President's veto here. I endorse the bill in its current form, and while I may have taken a different approach here, it's important to send a message when legislators aren't doing their jobs. We're having similar problems in Fremont.
