Trying to explain this to a friend who knew about the lettuce but hasn't been keeping up otherwise, and I'm finding it really difficult to convey all aspects of the madness. Just astonishing how the vote was handled - and how bad Truss is at running her own government.

Yes, I had an awfully hard time tonight explaining to a friend who doesn't know the names of a hundred different Conservative MPs why exactly it's so funny that Grant Shapps is Home Secretary now.

Incidentally, Truss's "fighter not a quitter" line yesterday happened to be directly 'stolen' from Peter Mandelson at the 2001 Hartlepool count. Mandelson was likely directing that towards Arthur Scargill.

Yeah - it’s a really odd choice. She used exactly the same intonation as Mandelson, and repeated it when interrupted. It was a purposeful choice. Not sure why she decided to emulate a man arguably most famous for being kicked out of the cabinet several times.

Cabinet said to be loyal to Truss until October 31st, and no further. In contrast, backbenchers including Simon Hoare and Crispin Blunt are now calling for the PM to go today.

I still can’t get over it. This is textbook “free vote” stuff, right? A motion that ended up with a 100-vote margin, with specific defections already expected for constituency and manifesto-based reasons — why burn so much political capital on THIS, of all things?

The current PM forgot her safe word and she's actively steering the country off a cliff. At this rate they'll be some horrible mashup of Argentina and Italy by the end of the year. Who the hell cares about parties anymore?

It’s not specifically about the parties - it’s about the impact that bringing Johnson back would have. This inquiry could still see Johnson suspended from the Commons for a week or two - which could force a by-election in his seat.

Between that, and the optics of reappointing a man under investigation to run the country, this is a point about where the party goes next. Picking Johnson isn’t feasible, but some loyalist MPs still need to be convinced of that. Nadine Dorries is beyond anyone’s help, but some others might be able to be convinced to back a unity ticket instead.

Arguably it was even more idiotic than the mini budget, which at least makes sense if you remember Truss and Kwarteng are zealots with something to prove. This was just idiocy on a monumental scale, a classic example of looking both extremely weak and heavy handed at the same time.

I feel the root is a Whip culture where people are cosplaying as tough guy enforcers, without realising that the classic whips had a few more tricks up their sleeves than the Mafioso routine (and also not realising that the backbenches are not green rookie MPs but full of egos and has beens not afraid to show a bit of mettle).

If this continues how long until we have to invoke 'America is a better place to live than the UK now'? I presume during the winter if Hunt has any substantial power and the NHS crashes.

Graham Brady has arrived at No.10.

Also, the rumoured meeting of the 1922 Executive isn't happening today, perhaps because they view it as futile.

That makes sense - MPs have started briefing that the 1922 Executive, including Brady, should be removed if they don’t act quickly. Holding a meeting where they don’t agree to make any serious moves would only speed that up, and further divide the party.
