Okay, maybe Mike Johnson is a competent parliamentarian.

Ultimately going to an election is the only way for any stability at this point. Nobody is backing Liz, and Boris doesn't currently want to be brought back.

What I imagine is going on in the UK right now:

Which naturally means that Charles takes over as dictator.

That's ITV, not C4...

Also, the last time we had three administrations in one year was 1945; Churchill's wartime coalition until the war in Europe ended, a Tory-only government until the GE, than Attlee's Labour one.

Wasn't that 1974? Heath majority until February, Wilson's minority until October and after that a Wilson slim majority.

Even then it was only two PMs and they only changed because one lost an election.

Here we would have three PMs within like two months, all from the same party tearing itself apart. THAT is chaos and disarray.

Calling a general election makes no sense from a political standpoint. There's really no regrouping from where they would be if the election was called today.

Perhaps not as crazy as it sounds? He could be the unity candidate to fall on the sword and end it with a general election. Pretty sure he said he’s not running next time anyway.

Tomorrow’s papers are out - brutal for Truss. The Sun, the Express, the Mail, none of them are interested in spinning the situation for Liz anymore.

I suppose the Battlestar Galactica reference would escape a lot of people.

I swear yesterday things felt like they might calm down a bit, so much for that.

What the country needs is an election as the Tories are clearly incapable of running a functioning government at the moment. But the only people who can make that happen are also the only people who's interests an election are not in. It's a pickle.

If things are bad in the Conservative Party, always expect Steve Baker to wade in and make the fight more contentious. While stripping the whip for a confidence vote rebellion is the convention, it’s hard to see an argument for it when the government itself U-turned at the last minute. Baker never misses a chance to be needlessly antagonistic though, so here we are:

My money is that Truss will be out by next Monday. Idk who the next PM could be besides Mordaunt, although maybe a potential Badenoch resignation could set her up? Braverman and co are of course to insane to command party support.

I don't think we should overestimate the sanity of a party that somehow picked Truss in the first place.

Maybe because of this clusterf--k the UK will become more like the US in the long run, in the sense of not ousting future PMs as easily as they did Johnson. I bet a lot of Tories are regretting that now, and probably wish they had taken a more Trumpian approach actually of aggressively defending him despite all his transgressions rather than turning on him. The man did win them a huge landslide after all.

And no I don't see how or why the Tories would call an election that they know will be a bloodbath for them. That means either the UK is stuck with Truss or will have to find some stable alternative.

I will laugh and laugh and laugh if by some chance that means Boris DOES come back.

Now that means the PM loses the whip, right?

I was not around when this vote was going on, how many are we talking about having the whip withdrawn on if they go through with this?
