One of the big issues for the government (aside from the obvious) is that the backbenches are now full of ex ministers, failed rising stars, would-be grandees and the like: people who have tasted power and cannot be bossed around by anybody. Smith is just one example.

On a lighter note, a former Deputy Prime Minister has been accused of taking bribes from OnlyFans.

I've had some embarrassing MPs, haven't I?

I don’t understand why the Chancellor isn’t resigning?

His entire budget and more so the economic policy of the Government has collapsed. This is very close to being an issue that makes Governments fall.

He seems like a true believer. Economic ultra-rightism never fails, only is failed.

We may have reached the point where Sheffield Hallam has to be considered in the same bracket as Rochdale, Peterborough, Leicester East and the entire county of Shropshire.

Worst Tory poll result since Gallup on Jan 9, 1995 that had the Tories on 18.5%. And maybe the second-worst result ever.

Amazing, but this can’t go on for much longer, can it? Something has to give at some point, or are Tories really just gong to let Truss dive the party into the grave and beyond?

"Flanby" was the nickname of François Hollande, president of France who left office with 4% approval.

Ah… I remember the car crash that was the end of the Hollande premiership, but I wasn’t following it closely enough to pick up on the nicknames.

The Times is reporting discussions of a Sunak/Mordaunt “joint ticket” to replace Truss.

The Tories have actually gained a seat in a council by-election tonight, in Waltham Abbey, Essex, but it was a very odd by-election where the only other candidate was the Green ex-councillor whose disqualification for non-attendance caused the by-election.

Mordaunt should be the one leading it. Sunak discredited himself by losing to Truss - he had his shot and he blew it.

Is it possible that instead of the drawn-out counting that preceded the fall of Johnson, one day we'll just find out out of the blue that Sir Graham got the required number of letters and it's over?

Brady has implied that he’s not going to change the rules, but would intervene if a majority of MPs wrote him letters of no confidence. So, in theory, we really could wake up one morning and find out that it’s all over.

But… this is the Conservative Party, in 2022. So odds are we’ll see all the twists and turns play out publicly, with catty one-liners leaked to the press on a near-daily basis, and all the big developments leaked out to sympathetic journalists ahead of time.

To be quite honest, though, Truss being brought down by Rishi getting a big "I told you so!" moment is (short of reinstating BoJo) objectively the funniest way for the Tories to end up making 2022 a Year of 3 Prime Ministers, & that'd be not in spite of but frankly because he's the one who started this whole mess to begin with.

Liz's approval rating has been getting the daily polling treatment over at Morning Consult and right now it stands at a comical 16-71% (-56), which I believe is her worst personal rating yet.

Being less popular than Prince Andrew is going to be one of the very few accomplishments of her premiership.

I'm very out of the loop regarding British politics. Is anyone willing gimme a brief explanation as to why Truss has reached Dubya '08 approval ratings?

A disastrous budget (especially in PR terms) late last month followed by various other forms of ineptness (u-turning on certain aspects, even u-turning on u-turning, various car crash interviews). Add Truss's surreal lack of charisma and the party divisions that this has caused and you get the polling figures.
