As critical as I have been of Biden, this was a uniting speech. You cannot claim to love this country while hating democracy.

This. It's hilarious to me that pundits are so worried about it being "political" or not. It's inherently not political, it only appears to be because you have to talk about our former president and his movement and how that plays a role in all of this.

Biden literally spoke about democracy at how important it is to the United States. The former president quite literally tried to overthrow our last election and continues to do things that make it seem like he'd gladly do it again. Is that NOT something we should view as a threat to this country? Is that NOT something we should be talking about?

Not just that, but he made an appeal to everyone who does NOT submit to Trump's extreme ideology, and in fact, if you listen to the entire speech, he spent nearly just as much time going on about how America's best days are ahead of it, how we have to come together to defeat anti-democracy movements, etc. It was at its core about defending democracy, it just happens that the last president is factually a huge threat to that. Not Biden's fault. It is what it is.

It's insane to me that what pundits got out of that was ... the marines at the door and that it was a "political" speech. They continue to completely normalize everything Trump has done and as if it is not really a historical big deal as it really is. Really sad, and shows that if something even worse ever happens, they'll be ill-equipped to handle it.

While I didn't like W. Bush as a president, I couldn't help but feel that Biden's speech reminded me of a speech he would've made. To me, natinoalism includes liberty, justice, freedom etc. and that is what made/makes America great and is the defining traits of a patriot. If Trump wants to be patriotic, he needs to learn something from Biden, denounce the violence and then focus on the policies. Democracy becoming a partisan issue could help Dems at least in the short term and earn them enough support as many dissatisfied Dems are having second thoughts about switching. There's a reason Biden has approval ratings near 40 and yet Congress is a tossup and it has nothing to do with a stolen election plot.

And there was no better comparison of Biden and Trump than during the speech when a heckler was yelling something and Biden said well, that's your right because of democracy. Meanwhile, Trump would've yelled some expletive at him and probably had him thrown out of the area.

If it's a success, he should do a weekly address to the nation, like a modern day fireside chat.

This worked out great for Carter after all!

Have not seen the speech but the choice of coloring makes it seem like he’s gone full blown Sith

"They exhibited themselves as righteous on account of being scrupulous keepers of the law but were, in fact, not righteous: their mask of righteousness hid a secret inner world of ungodly thoughts and feelings?" That's pretty rich coming from Mr. "Love Thy Neighbor as Thyself."

Imagine if Trump gave this speech about the left. You would all be foaming at the mouth.

This was not the speech of a winning popular President, this was the speech of a feeble old man realizing his party is about to lose.

I have never seen such demonic energy as I saw in this speech. Replace "MAGA" with "kulak" and you basically have Stalin.

Like when he said

Quote
Here, in the United States, we are alarmed by new calls to adopt socialism in our country. America was founded on liberty and independence --- not government coercion, domination, and control. We are born free, and we will stay free. Tonight, we renew our resolve that America will never be a socialist country.

At the 2019 SOTU, and every Democrat in Congress just kind of sat there without much of a reaction beyond Bernie smirking, and the whole speech was promptly forgotten both by the media and the public writ large?

Speech was fine. Political violence is bad. Undermining elections is bad.

Does anyone think that Biden is just baiting Trump to respond in some absurd way in order to torpedo Republicans? There's absolutely no chance Trump doesn't take the bait.

I doubt that was Biden's primary goal, but I also don't think Biden would be upset if that scenario plays out.

The left is not actively working to end American democracy. The right is.

They’re still so, so mad that their guy lost in 2012
Romney is the key to all of this. Barack Obama didn't roll over and let him win. They will never forgive Biden for that.

Why would anyone be upset at a president saying political violence is bad, calling for fair elections, and saying it’s wrong to attempt a coup?

It's magnificent.

This is my dream timeline of Biden's Presidency, besides having 52 seats in the Senate and all that.

Democrats are really getting too cocky. They've had a good month. Why do they have to ruin it by giving an address that will clearly anger Republicans and get them riled up to vote, all while having a dark backdrop that makes Biden look evil? It makes no sense. The midterm elections are officially lost for Democrats, and this is to blame.

Baiting Republican base voters into foaming at the mouth at how Joe Biden is a satanic villain, a pedo Hitler, is quite likely to make Republicans look like psychos because the typical swing voter thinks that Joe Biden is inept or incompetent, not malevolent. No one watched this speech and no one but psycho Republicans will think the dark backdrop means Biden = Hitler.

But why would whoever decided this would be the backdrop choose this? There's no way it can be taken in a good way
