Wait, is that real? Because that'd be huge if his passports were taken away!

Unless he's lying I guess so. He's the only one that would know besides DOJ.

And mistakenly, or intentionally?
Because if intentionally, then that means they're afraid he could be a flight risk.

Surely the passports wouldn't be sitting in storage boxes.  The initial reports mentioned that Trump's safe (a logical place to keep them) was searched, so I suspect that's where they were found.

It takes a lot of justification to seize a passport. He is certainly a flight risk and if the FBI felt compelled to take his passport then the whatever potential charges that might be handed down are severe.

It's not a big deal to have two active U.S. passports (which since one is expired, is all he has).  See https://money.cnn.com/2017/11/01/news/economy/manafort-multiple-passports/index.html.  More than two is unusual, as noted in the linked article about Paul Manafort.

Trump’s mother was a UK citizen by birth, and there are some who think that he might be able to apply for citizenship here, but there are lots of snags, not least that his mother naturalised in the US in the 40s, before Donald was born.

I’m struggling to think of another country he would hold a passport for. Maybe he just hoards all his expired passports?

Trump may still have a diplomatic passport. I think ex-presidents are often allowed to keep them as a courtesy

I could see him keeping his official/diplomatic passport from his time as president, plus having a normal passport, as well as a second expired US passport. The state department allows you to have a second passport book that lasts for four years if you meet certain criteria.

Wouldn’t shock me if he had some random foreign passport from like St Kitts and Nevis or someplace where you can basically buy citizenship for what would be pennies to Trump.

Old School Republican,
You know what struck me the most is the timing of this Search Warrant at Mar-a-Lago. Most of the sort of liberal Cable News saying the DoJ's Decision wasn't a Political One. How convinient!

BUT how can it not be when we are less than 85 Days away from the Midterms?

Do you have any thoughts on this?

I think either side will say it helped or hurt them once the Election is over.

Not OSR, but it wouldn't surprise me if it was *something* of a political move.  Or at the very least, those who ordered it aren't stupid -- even if it was completely apolitical on paper, they're not oblivious to its political implications.

Well, but does not being blind to the political implications make this a political move in any way? If anything that would imply that the justice department wanted to be not just sure they had a case, not just damn sure, but God damn sure before taking a step like this.

From what I've learned from years of watching Death in Paradise, if they take your passport, you're either the murderer, or you're going to be in the room during the big reveal of who the murderer is so the detective can build suspense.

I mean I actually think it would be reckless for DOJ not to consider the political consequences of such a decision. Going after a former president is inherently political no matter what anyone says and that's why it should not happen other than the most serious of circumstances.

I do not agree with your belief that the President should be above the law except under extreme circumstances.

The real world isn’t a high school civics class and the fact is it also would result in many many other members of previous administrations being potentially prosecuted given that technically our foreign policy since 1945 probably has resulted in laws being broken by multiple administrators.

Like I said I don’t think Eisenhower or Nixon should have been prosecuted for Their use of the CIA , LBJ for Gulf of Tonkin lie , Reagan/Bush for Iran Contra , W for Guantanamo Bay , Obama for how he used drones etc .

Who is saying otherwise? Whether or not the examples you gave would hypothetically warrant impeachment, literally no one outside some extremely online Fringe types calling for Bush and she need to be prosecuted for war crimes that they Hague, oh and Obama too, blah blah blah blah blah, in none of those above mention actions did anyone Beyond said French ever suggest criminal prosecution was warranted. Not because of some bygone era of bipartisan cooperation in ignoring a president's violation of American law if it had to do with foreign policy, but because there were realistically speaking no crimes against American statutes committed.

Followed by a slow motion scene at the end set to "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" where the detective and the police breach the killer's apartment but discover he's long gone and the detective realizes that the apartment belongs to his brother.  Cut to black just after this revelation.  Roll credits.

I watch too much Netflix.

It seems like something he’d blurt out without thinking about the implications of having his passports seized.

I guess authorities would never deny or confirm they seized his passports? So it will be anyone's guess.

You cannot arrest Trumpy.

As soon as you throw him in the back seat of a Police Car, the USA will decay into Civil War.

So be it. Nobody is above the law.

No clue now. Still nothing on D.E.'s 55 & 56.
