Interested to see what the result here is, given that I'm currently reading Ireland: A History by Thomas Bartlett.

I voted FC.

One of the greatest countries on Earth and anyone who thinks otherwise is an uncultured slob.

Major freedom country. Really enjoyed the trip I took to Dublin three years ago, and the Irish culture is wonderful. I believe their path to independence was earned after all they went through in their history.

I've heard it's a very beautiful country so I'd like to travel there, along with Italy.

Nice country, but a bit overrated by Americans.

HC as European countries go I rank it along the likes of Bulgaria and Serbia, which is I think all I need to say about my opinions on Ireland.

Had the opportunity to visit many times when my brother and his family lived in Dublin, and both of my nieces were born there.  Wonderful people, culture, and scenery.

LOL it's pretty funny considering that hot single mother hipster Christian emo fan from that Facebook group is literally the best person I can think of to ever come out of Ireland.

The Near Abroad and That Bloody Headache. I've been to The Near Abroad and quite like it, but actually have never visited That Bloody Headache.

In the Republic, Dublin is fantastic, and genuinely worth the trip. Donegal is fantastic, wild, and you could walk for days in the hills and on the coast.

I’m of Northern Irish stock, so naturally I’m forever cursed to look at Ulster with a mix of genuine fondness and slight embarrassment. But the latter is mostly just because of Stormont.

This. Supporting his role in the Civil War and establishing Parliament as the preeminent force in English government is all well and fine, but his actions in Ireland are historically indefensible.

Beautiful country. I've visited the Dingle Peninsula and drove around the Ring of Kerry and I'll never forget how green and lush it is (because of all the rain). The Emerald Isle moniker is well deserved.

And it's a stereotype, but the people really are the best in the world. Almost every Irish person I've known north or south has the most gregarious demeanour and sense of humour like people have nowhere else. Like they're forever on a 'jolly', as we say.

And of course you've got Yeats, Joyce, Van Morrison etc. on the cultural production side also.

Beautiful island and beautiful people, inside and out. A nice contrast to their somewhat obnoxious next door neighbors. Smiley

Just to be clear, I don't support Cromwell's actions in Ireland.

That being said, as a yellow avatar, perhaps I should just own it and double down.

No, no, that would be if you had a maroon avatar. Ireton was a supporter of the Levellers. The yellow avatar would suggest, instead, support for Russell's policies during the Potato Famine.

Shades of Mama Cassius repeatedly instructing Papa Cassius not to make any jokes about Cromwell or potatoes at my Godfather's wedding to his Irish second wife - safe to say the instructions were not followed.

It's not new by any means, but the way you frequently and gleefully declare your ignorance and disdain for all art, literature, and cultures outside your own bizarre tastes is something that will never stop being weird to me.
