Anthony Albanese stumbles on First Day of Campaigning at First Press Conference

Basic Economic Questions

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vyK6gAb6Eao

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NUcCi63k1GA

Possibly the worst first day of campaigning in Australian politics. Anthony Albanese could not name the Reserve Bank Cash Rate or National Unemployment Rate.

Scomo quickly pounced and just received some free fodder for his campaign ads.

Day 1: Scomo 1, Albanese 0

Labor are leading by 14 points in the polls over the LNP.

Not even a Hillary Clinton style choke will stop Albo from losing this election.

Labor has got it in the bag.

Women just don't like Scomo.

It's compulsory to vote if you are an Australian.

But it's not compulsory to enrol to vote.

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-04-18/why-cant-australian-electoral-commission-just-enrol-everyone/100997082

A lot of first time voters did not enrol because they did not know the cut off date was yesterday.

Link please?

I'm pretty sure it's this from Roy Morgan: https://www.roymorgan.com/findings/8931-roy-morgan-poll-on-federal-voting-intention-early-april-2022-202204110842

The problem being that Roy Morgan is just not a particularly good pollster.

Clearly, it was before Albanese went on the campaign trail and opened his mouth and started talking.

I still think Labor will win. Have to remember WA Labor in the last state election won 95% of the seats.

Liberals have two sitting members who sit in total isolation compared to the 30 odd Labor members.

Albanese could not tell the media his own policy on the NDIS.

NDIS Stumble

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_BC1lhbK98Q

Even though this guy sounds like a bumbling idiot in front of the camera, I still think he has this election in the bag.

Sportbet has

Labor at $1.40
Coalition at $2.90
Hung Parliament at $2.05

I am thinking that Labor will romp it in through encumbency fatigue.

I voted.

Based on the number of socialists down at the voting booth, I would say Fremantle will stay Labor in 2022.

How does one recognize a socialist? Tongue

Come to Fremantle and I will take you for a walk around the town centre.

Sportsbet have Labor shortening to $1.37 and now Liberals are $3.10.

https://www.sportsbet.com.au/betting/politics/australian-federal-politics/47th-parliament-of-australia-4664855

Sportsbet would have the best research in the market as their money is on the line. They have an impressive research process with sports, and if that translates to politics, Albanese has a new house in Canberra to live in.

You don't lose from $1.37 unless you are named Hillary Clinton.

Is immigration/refugee policy an issue at all during this election ?

https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2022/apr/19/factcheck-is-labors-policy-on-asylum-seekers-and-refugees-any-different-to-the-coalitions

"The shadow home affairs minister, Kristina Keneally, confirmed on Tuesday that Labor “completely supports Operation Sovereign Borders – offshore processing, regional resettlement and boat turnbacks where safe to do so”.

“No one who has attempted to come by boat since the operation of Sovereign Borders will be allowed to settle in Australia.”

Offshore detention is an issue. But Labor is pretty quiet despite a lot of members on the left wanting to remove it.

Why the silence?

It's because all of the people in detention currently were put there by Labor.

At the end of the day, offshore detention works. It work's really well combined with a policy stating that you will never settle in Australia if you come here illegally. Once Australia introduced offshore detention ~2013, the number of boats and illegal refugees dropped to.....zero. Absolute zero. We have not had one since.

Labor are not necessarily pushing offshore detention, and they helped implement it, but they know the alternative will lead to an influx of boat people and their children drowning on their way from Indonesia to Australia.

So for example, boat owners in southern Indonesia are currently watching the election, and if Labor wins, they will wait to see if offshore detention gets scrapped. Then, the very next day, they will take $50k from Sri Lankans, Iranians and Afghnistanis currently living in Indonesia and start the journey over the sea to Australia.

England are considering offshore detention now with the English Channel because it works in Australia.

And children overboard and people drowning is a political disaster. More people in detention. Drama. So Labor are walking a tight rope.

Australia needs skilled migration to supplement the workforce. The analysis of refugees and other immigrants from Africa over the last decade shows a high proportion of people going onto long term social security and staying on the long term unemployment queue.

Australian's are not really keen on importing people with low language skills and social integration abilities, low work ethic and wanting to sit on social security and then bring over 5 relatives to simply mooch on social security.

So there has been a big push over the last decade to bring in skilled migrants from India and England.

In particular, we are short on Accountants, Doctors and Nurses.

We certainly have no shortage of lawyers.

.......the fact is that statically, the Australian economy had been better under Labor.

That is simply incorrect. Liberal fiscal management under Peter Costello was first class, one of the best Treasurers of the modern era.

In simple terms, the Liberal Party are more focussed on economic development and business. The Liberal Party is traditionally more aligned with the largest banks and mining companies.

The Labor Party are more focussed on social issues and environmental and climate issues. They are more linked with union movement etc.

So it is absurd that one could argue that the Labor Party is better at managing the economy.

I have already voted, and this woman is not in my electorate, but her CV is super impressive.

https://www.katechaney.com.au/

We need to clone this woman 100 times and unleash her thinking into society.

Will be super keen to see how she goes. Just incredible to fit that career into her CV plus 3 kids.

Where was this woman when I was a young man dating?

I mean, if the ALP manage to blow this one they might as well pack up and go home.

From Sportsbet:

Labor are favourite with 76-80 seats predicted.

Liberals are predicted to only get 66-70 seats. Josh Frydenburg predicted to lose his seat.

Labor would then have a clear majority of the 151 available seats.

On Sportsbet, Labor have fallen out to $1.42

Liberals have 'shorten'ed to $2.90

Sportsbet is the most accurate poll in Australia. Once they put you at $1.42, you are overwhelming favourite.

Scott Morrison just needs Albanese to forget the official Reserve Bank cash rate, the national Unemployment Rate and his own 6 point policies live on national TV.......oh wait.

Fancy a Sri Lanka boatload of refugees rocking up on the Western Australian coastline on Labor's first day in office.

The audacity.

Clearly they didn't read the news that every single refugee in detention was put there by Labor.

Operation sovereign borders will continue under Labor. They know it's an effective deterrent.

Looks like Labor needs WA to put them over the top into majority.

Labor were 96% in the WA State Election, so it should be a formality now.

Labor just need 21 more seats to win.

Really impressed with Kate Chaney out of the gate:

https://www.abc.net.au/news/elections/federal/2022/guide/curt

Super intelligent and experienced business woman. I really liked her campaign and she is a new breed of politician to enter the mix.

My electorate of Fremantle has gone to Labor.

So are the "teals" basically a reincarnation of the old Australian Democrats?

No,

These are mainly women up against Liberal candidates who had the backing of a group called Climate 200 who raised $11M.

These are pretty smart women too who all had objections to Liberal's lack of a climate policy.

Evidently, they read the tea leaves perfectly.

A PSA for Australian-left posters: don't wear "Liberal tears" merchandise here in the U.S. or we'll think you're a Trumpist Tongue

Australian's don't have the political bloodsport ethos that the US has.

For example, most people don't 'enemize' their colleagues and friends based on political party.

If you cannot go somewhere or meet with people because of their political alliance, it might be time to put some big boys pants on and stop being an immature teenager.

Nobody I know in Western Australia is prejudice against people based on their politics.

It's not part of our national identity.

they should make Katter speaker for banter.
Speaker Katter will order the bringing in of a crocodile into the chamber if that is what is needed to restore order in the Parliament.

Careful what you wish for....

Outside their own heads. the Greens actually have little support from working class Australian voters. Years of refusing to listen to what these voters are saying and lecturing them on how they are wrong (notably on unauthorised immigration), will do that.
They've got more support than the far right but jobs you stan

not from working class Australians.
Even from working class australinans they do

most working class Australians oppose unauthorised immigration by boat, which the Greens support.

The majority of top earning and high wealth Australians overwhelmingly oppose unauthorised immigration by boat.

Most Australians would be happy with immihration staff going to Poland and then selecting refugees from Ukraine who are in genuine need of resettlement until Russia pisses off.

The Sri Lankan and Indonesian boats are run by criminal networks and putting lives at risk.

Both Labor and Liberal are happy with the refugee system as it currently stands. Labor put it in place.

The Teal independents are not so thrilled with it, so that might be where things start to change with immigration policy.

I think there were 6 or 7 teals.

Richard Marles happy to have his face on this news story. I am surprised they did not choose him for PM candidate/leader of opposition.

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-05-24/labor-turns-back-election-day-asylum-seeker-boat-arrival/101095322

They waited 6 years for a Labor victory and got turned back.

"Rear Admiral Justin Jones said Australia's policy on illegal boat arrivals has not changed since Labor formed government.

"We will intercept any vessel seeking to reach Australia illegally, and safely return those on board to their point of departure or country of origin, or if not safe to do so, they will be transferred to regional processing," he said.

If Labor keep up this policy, they will keep a lot of voters happy and be able to advance climate policy with no disruption.

Australia needs more women like this one in politics.

Niece of former Liberal Senator Fred Chaney, Kate is a brain box with an excellent business CV.
