Embattled New Jersey Gov. Jim McGreevey officially resigns on Sept. 4, 2004, right next to the deadline to resign to trigger a November 2 special election, the same date of the Bush vs. Kerry election where President Bush is competitive politically in the state, only trailing by 4 points and exceeding expectations in traditionally Democratic-rich Middlesex, Bergen and Camden counties.

Republicans nominate Representative Mike Ferguson, Democrats nominate State Senate President Dick Codey, who is Acting Governor anyway.

Who wins?
