It may actually happen soon-ish (as in two-three weeks). Was Bakhmut remotely worth the insane losses Russia and the Wagner Group paid for it? There's barely a Bakhmut left now.

That's something that is really easy to miss for a casual observer. Months of huge losses in both personnel, equipment and ammunition can take such a toll that it has a major impact on offensive actions in the short/medium term, and possibly even permanently if the country is maxed out in manpower and materiel.

The amount of trained soldiers and equipment Russia has expended trying to capture Bakhmut far outpaces that town's worth, and Wagner (and Russia in general, to the extent that Wagner is an important cog in their war machine) is severely weakening their own long-term position in this war by expending so much of their force on it.

Nothing quite says 'anti-imperialism' like having big countries come together to decide the fate of smaller countries.

"The journalists in Russia don't ask these questions. Journalists....don't ask questions at all."

That honestly sums up Putin's Russia very well.

"Oleksiy Arestovich resigns as advisor to Zelensky’s office"

Quote
Arestovich was sharply criticized in Ukraine after his statement that a Russian missile that hit a residential building in Dnipro on January 14 was allegedly shot down by Ukrainian air defense forces.

"‘US monetary control of world will collapse’ due to Ukraine war: French expert"

Quote
In an interview with Le Figaro on Friday, French historian and anthropologist Emmanuel Todd said, “If the Russian economy offers long-term resistance to sanctions and manages to bleed the European economy white and manages to survive with Chinese support, US monetary control of the world will collapse and with it, the US’ ability to finance its mammoth trade deficit for next to nothing.”

Insightful and quick thread by ChrisO - Biggest takeaway is that conscripts who finished compulsory military service will not be exempt from mobilization:

Quote
3/ Utility workers are reported to be preparing to deliver mobilisation notices and, according to a source, have been banned from taking holidays in January and February
Quote
4/ Sources in Moscow's military registration and enlistment offices have told Verstka that their superiors have warned them that January-February "will be difficult".

Verstka has also been told by sources in the Russian parliament that a second mobilisation will happen soon.
Quote
5/ The Kremlin is reported to have been working over the winter to avoid the many well-publicised problems encountered in the first wave of mobilisation and has taken technical and organisational steps to overcome them.
Quote
6/ As Verstka notes, "Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu himself said that the work of the military registration and enlistment offices was being modernised, the existing databases were digitised and interaction between them and the regional authorities was being established."
Quote
7/ A parliamentary source says that "since October, the authorities have more or less managed to solve the problem of manning and uniforming the mobilised".
Quote
8/ Until now, conscripts (men doing compulsory military service – a distinct category from the mobilised) have been exempt from mobilisation. However, the source says that newly serving conscripts will be the first to be called up for mobilisation.
Quote
9/ The Kremlin is unlikely to try to keep the new mobilisation secret, as information about it "will turn up on social networks anyway". However, there's little doubt that it will be controversial, especially if conscripts are now to be mobilised.
Quote
10/ Russian law prohibits deploying conscripts outside the borders of the Russian Federation. Putin's annexation of four Ukrainian regions last year likely overcomes this legal obstacle, clearing the way for conscripts to join the fighting. /end

A couple weeks ago I was in Bali for the New Years and a friend's wedding. It was chock full of the most entitled, intolerant and obnoxious Russians. Can't imagine how unbearable it will get when the second wave of mobilization is announced. A local friend told me that there was already a few accidents where unlicensed Russian drivers crashed their vehicles.

I wonder why Russians would try to recruit Serbs to fight in a genocidal war in a neighboring country? Hmmm.....

Besides the obvious [look at Ukraine], I like that Kosovo is colored in black. Making the country seem as if it's some mysterious unexplored place that would have been labeled "there be dragons" on a medieval map.

The original tweet is still up as of right now, which makes it even funnier to me:

Aside from the Ukraine border issue, does that map factor in purchasing power? Given how much higher wages are in Ireland, I wouldn't be surprised if they're much better off on net than even Russia.

Is this the same Russia that's selling oil at a loss, is this the same Europe where fuel prices have fallen below pre-2022 levels, and is this the same China that has quietly given up on buying an overseas empire?
