The only thing Putin understands is strength and the only thing we have been showing is weakness.

Biden disappoints me.

Yes, yes, we get it, you and Forumlurker both want The Day After and Threads to become reality.
No, appeasement is what will lead to that.

He isn't stupid.

He knows that if he sent troops, there would be another coup and Putin is probably too busy to save him.

Kremlin: Neutral Ukraine with own army possible compromise option

That's a stark admission that Russia doesn't have the resources to occupy all of Ukraine.

Something that was fairly obvious to many of us before this war started.

Clearly, it wasn't to Putin, who is just coming to realize that bit off more than he can chew.

The thing about war crimes is that sometimes they're hard to define exactly and there are grey areas and complications and technicalities... and sometimes they're incredibly clear-cut. Bombing a theatre sheltering maybe thousands of people would be an example of the latter. Anyway, the grim and ghastly thing is that none of this is necessarily contradictory with the suggestion that Putin is looking for a way out of this mess. Not remotely.
True but committing more war crimes makes it harder for Ukrainians to accept a ceasefire deal. Some of the more hardline Ukrainian paramilitary groups are already decrying the leaked deal in FT and they're not alone.

What is the "leaked deal" and its provenance? I missed that. Thanks.

Thanks. To ask the obvious, what does "legal status" in Crimea Ukraine mean?

In other news, a NYT reporter, a Mr. Max Fisher. puts up a piece about nuclear war odds going up, still low, but up. The reasons stated are the obvious ones we have been talking about. So if such chatter is gas lighting, then the NYT has joined the club.

https://www.nytimes.com/2022/03/16/world/europe/ukraine-russia-nuclear-war.html

Just to be clear, it's talking about the Russian language getting legal status.

No NATO wouldn't mean no EU, though? Remember that this is was initially sparked the entire crisis in 2013/14. It was about an association agreement the European Union, not NATO. That's also why Putin's NATO argument was always a bunch of BS, he's not afraid of NATO, he's afraid of democracy. And strong democratic norms are a key precondition for joining EU.

It said in the article:

Quote
Putin’s press secretary Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Wednesday that neutrality for Ukraine based on the status of Austria or Sweden was a possibility.

Both Austria and Sweden are in the EU.

The Case Of Russia's Apparently Back From The Dead Black Sea Warship

Tl;dr the rocket barrage against the Vasily Bykov mentioned a few days ago most likely didn't work. Ukraine was right to request anti-ship missiles.

The real takeaway from this article is that many Ukrainian reports of casualties, battlefield victories, etc, are exaggerated or outright fake news.

That  is not the point of the article at all.  It explicitly was limited was limited to saying that the reported sinking of a Russian vessel, which was reported as "probably" sunk, apparently was only damaged. There's nothing whatsoever in there about all the other reports of large amounts of Russian troop and equipment losses being over-reported.

Around a week ago this thread breathlessly celebrated as they accepted without question the Ukrainian report of supposed ambush that destroyed the Vasily Bykov. Turns out that report was fake news. Given the obvious interest the Ukrainian government and media has in putting out favorable reports regardless of veracity, and now multiple documented cases where these reports have proven to be fake, how can any thinking person trust the reports coming out of Ukrainian sources? If you tell me one lie, then everything else you say is questionable too, that's how society has always worked. Clearly people in this thread are more interested in cheerleading for Ukraine than getting at the truth, which is their right, but they are bound to be disappointed if/when the two stray far from each other.

I never "accepted" that.

Back to the low effort non sequitur responses again? Who takes the W or L is still to be decided; I will say that if the US and China end up in a trade war, the US will suffer historic inflation and supply shortages among other economic consequences and the Democrats will be utterly destroyed in November.

Speaking of non sequiturs, lol.

Anyway, clearly the biggest L was taken by your parents, whose only child, I presume, ended up being, well, you.

LMAO, they are quite proud that despite being constantly exposed to Western propaganda,  I remain loyal to my people and my country. This is after all a common Western mistake; you love to think that Chinese people are all brainwashed by their government and would overthrow it if they were just informed, does it kill you to know that most Chinese people genuinely support the government and the party, especially when the USA is held up as an alternative?

Why don’t you move to China if  you like it so much , and given you call China your country instead of the US .

You are literally the best possible example of how immigrants should not act and you are a disgrace to the immigrant community

Has has gotten too comfortable with Western comforts to work in a sweatshop for a dollar a day.

German economy minister Robert Habeck went to Qatar and made a big f****ng gas deal. The Sheikhs were apparently very acommodating and we're happy to have found ourselves an autocracy that doesn't invade other countries.

That's the kind of autocrats that we like.

We should test our latest weapons on Russian troops in Ukraine.

Putin won't say anything because he's trying to keep the number of dead Russians a secret.
