I'd say pretty lean FF. He seemed like a Bill Clintonesque type of Democrat but the way he destroyed Dan Quayle in that debate was remarkable.

HP for depriving us of Ralph Yarborough, one of the most progressive Southern Democrats of his time, by campaigning on dumb right-wing cultural grievances, and pushing for the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act. Being capable of embarrassing Dan Quayle is not remotely a high bar.

Apparently Margaret Thatcher was a fan of his, which also gives me pause.

Eh, the running mate can only save thé nominee in a close election. Dukakis was just a really Bad nominee who was never beating Gore. My Dad was a conservadem from Louisiana (he's no longer conservative lol, but that's beyond thé point), but Bentsen wasnt going tu sway someone who wasnt already at least lean Dem. It's only if the candidates are about equal that the running mate could sway things. 1988 was never going to ne roughly equal
