We probably only narrowly dodged an actual massacre on that day. If they had done what they wanted to do to Pence, any limited amount of restraint in that mob would have been gone, and every single member of Congress would have been a target for similar violence except perhaps for the Qanon freaks who may have joined in and turned on their colleagues.

If he had actually led the cabinet in invoking the 25th Amendment and kept Trump away from any executive power for the remainder of his presidency, especially in light of the potential for flagrant abuses of the pardon power in the wake of the coup attempt, I might *grudgingly* call Pence a hero. But given that he failed to do that, I will not be participating in giving such lofty praise to a man who literally just did his legally-mandated job after four years of pathetic subservience.

These hearings are not about stopping Republicans' treason. They're not about justice for Trump and his fellow traitors. These hearings are a record.

They are making certain that, if and when people vote for Donald the Traitor again, no American can legitimately claim they "didn't know" or "don't believe" that January 6th, 2021, and everything leading up to it, was a shameless, naked assault on Americans, our Republic, and our freedoms.

This is about an end to pretense and excuses. No matter what happens in coming years, Donald Trump,and the Republican Party will never escape these hearings.  If the Republican Party is so foolish and wicked as to once again nominate Donald Trump, they will be declaring war on the United States. Should he somehow win, be it by hook and crook or through a very real electoral victory,  he and his government will still lack the legitimacy that all prior Presidential Administrations, even his own, have enjoyed.

Of course the Republican party won't escape these hearings, they'll be embraced as part of the agenda. And they'll win on it.

EXACTLY! I don’t know why this is always overlooked. Pence is absolutely no hero. He was a pathetic Trump bootlicker during the entire administration and probably would have overturned the election if he actually believed that he had the power to do so. He was just looking out for his own self interest by not incriminating himself.

If he had announced that he was rejecting the electoral votes of x states under his authority as presiding officer, it's not clear what would happen next or how we get out of that. Eastman is right that SCOTUS may have refused to hear the case because of the political question doctrine. Jacob may be right that the election would be solved "in the streets" if Pence had done that. No he doesn't have the authority to do it but no one could have stopped him and it's what Trump was pressuring him to do. I don't think we should minimize that he saved us from something potentially very ugly.

It's pretty silly to call Pence a hero just for not doing something bad that he didn't have the authority to do. At best I'd call him a neutral figure and even that's only if you ignore his entire political career prior to January 6 of course.
