Incumbent President VdB (Greens) is running for a 2nd term.

Both ÖVP and SPÖ announce they won’t challenge him with own candidates and throw their endorsements behind VdB.

The FPÖ and NEOS on the other hand argue that it’s necessary to have opposition candidates even if polls say the incumbent President is popular.

For the FPÖ, the reason is „VdB = bad President“, while NEOS say the President is OK but democracy demands an alternative.

The former FPÖ challenger to VdB in 2016, Norbert Hofer, announces officially in late 2021 that he won’t run again against him.

Instead, the FPÖ, in an attempt to appear „modern“ - they choose 35-year old Petra Steger (a hardline party soldier, but daughter of the moderate Norbert Steger) to challenge VdB, while NEOS reactivate their former party leader Matthias Strolz for a candidacy.

I really liked the hipster, tree-hugging, positive-minded, always funny and joking Strolz while party leader of the liberal NEOS. He’d make an awesome President.

On the other hand, VdB is a solid President as well in a different manner: very laid-back, sometimes with funny/sarcastic s(n)ide remarks about the FPÖ and other fools and generally more elder statesmanlike. Being Green also fits the current Zeitgeist.

Steger would appeal to protest voters and the young politically not-that-interested, Covid-disappointed, rural crowd.

Why is Strolz groping himself in a campaign ad?

?

You mean the book cover I posted ?

It’s not a campaign ad ... and he just has his hands in the pocket (maybe the angle suggests he’s fondling his dick).

Would be open to Strolz, though I don't know enough about him. VdB seems fine, though. Would never support the FPÖ for anything.

Strolz would be a fine President, but VdB gets my vote.

VdB is going to win handily, so whoever the KPÖ endorses.

Yes, but only if he runs again - instead of retiring.

The funny thing is that VdB used to vote Communist in his youth years - but in 2016 the KPÖ argued that he’s become too (neo)-liberal (in the European sense, not the US sense).

The KPÖ still asked their voters to vote for him over Hofer.
