I don't get the strategy here. If the intent is simply to exert enough pressure to push the bills through the House, I would think it would be easier to flip one or two of the Blue Dog holdouts instead of up to 20 progressives. And you get both bills out of the former strategy instead of just BIF and the rule on the BBB.

No pubs voting for BIF?

some may vote for it but trump has already warned most of them not to

There wont be enough of them if 20 progressives do end up voting against it

So why are only 20 progressives planning to vote down the bill ? Shouldnt Jayapal get all of the progressives to agree ?

At least a few will, but it probably won't be 20.

Some are more militant and willing to buck leadership than others? Pretty common in legislative history. Plus, she doesn't need all of them.

The last I heard is that there might be around 10 Republicans that vote for the infrastructure bill, but McCarthy might hold them back from voting for it until/unless the Ds to get to 218 before he releases them to vote for it.

As much as it pains me to say this, but in this case the Democrats certainly deserve defeat next year.

I've been thinking this for some time. Neither the infrastructure bill nor the reconciliation bill seem to have the votes to pass, and that has been the situation for months now. Between the intransigence of the moderates on the one hand, and that of the progressives on the other, coupled with virtually unanimous Republican opposition, what can be done? If these bills fail, that will further hurt the Democrats heading into next year's midterms. They were already hurt by this debacle in the recent elections.

Hopefully a CBO report can get at least some moderates on board. Maybe not a hack like Gottheimer but enough to get enough votes for both BBB and BIF

Now you can only compare Pelosi's leadership with McConnell's leadership. This is very hard to imagine similar situation in Republican House or Senate conference

I genuinely can't believe Pelosi has f**ked this up so badly. This is late-period Theresa May levels of ineptitude handling a narrow majority. Her reputation as a parliamentarian has, or should have, completely collapsed in less than nine hours.

They're not going to "die." The house could pass BIF the day before the election if they want. They have over a year to pass it.

If these bills fail, that will further hurt the Democrats heading into next year's midterms. They were already hurt by this debacle in the recent elections.

I think the issue is more the progressives don't care about the infrastructure bill as far as their own personal priority. They'll vote for it but they don't care about it. It's just it's the biggest thing they can use as leverage to get what they really want. The Tea Party/Freedom Caucus split in the Democratic Party is real.

I genuinely can't believe Pelosi has f**ked this up so badly. This is late-period Theresa May levels of ineptitude handling a narrow majority. Her reputation as a parliamentarian has, or should have, completely collapsed in less than nine hours.

This is starting to feel like "New Gingrich coup" territory, tempered by no one with long-term political ambition wants to take over this dumpster fire right now (see Paul Ryan).

McConnell would just not bring it to vote. I remember some criticism of he would never bring stuff to vote unless he was certain he had the votes and the talk was "you need to put stuff on the floor and then you can arm-twist". Pelosi has been doing that and it hasn't worked.

We're about two hours into a vote on some point of order. The moderates Smiley Smiley Smiley came (allegedly) to heel with a plan to pass the rule on BBB and then move to final passage on BIF, but then Jayapal and roughly twenty other CPC hardliners bolted.

Hate to say it but those 20 progressives are fools if the vote to kill this bill because they are giving Manchin and other moderate exactly what they want

A big headline that blames them for hurting Biden agenda while Manchin not only gets off Scott free. He can now portray himself as someone who was always trying to help Biden unlike those 20 evil democrats he voted against him lol

Now of course that is the biggest load of BS but it will work because Progressives don't seem to understand that the average person is not going to know or even care about this inside the beltway political fight. The only thing that most Americans are going to see in the media is that 20 Dems voted to kill Biden's bill

Hasn't she always been like that? All her fame came from being able "to get under Trump's skin", whatever it means (perhaps not getting anything from the most left-wing (R) president ever). Dems with TDS loved it. Enjoy.
