Rush Limbaugh dead at 70

While I agreed with him on literally nothing and think he is one of the reasons modern conservatism in the US is so god damn toxic, he was still a person with a family and I feel bad for them. You can separate the personality from the person and he was probably a good husband and father. May he rest in peace.

I wasn't a fan. But people hated each other before Rush. He was always raw. He had the right to do so, it's free speech. If you don't like him, don't watch.

I lost my grandfather to lung cancer 7 years ago - it was slow, and painful. I am sorry that Limbaugh had to suffer that, and I am sorry that cancer remains such a scourge on our society. I am sorry for his wife, and his friends.

I will note however, that my grandfather was made comfortable, and guided through his disease, by doctors who worked in a universal healthcare system (that Limbaugh hated) that added at least a year to his life, and prevented his widow from bankruptcy.

I am regretful that Limbaugh had to suffer. But I wish his condition had given him the chance to reflect on his boorish approach to healthcare, and the suffering of his less economically fortunate listeners.

It's always sad when a person dies.

I never listened to his show or even read any articles about him because he never really interested me, but I did know a bit about him. My mother had the experience of hearing one of his shows in the lobby of a dentist's office during the 90s. The things he said about Hillary Clinton were quite offensive to her, which was interesting considering she was still a Republican at the time. Though not for much longer, and I imagine he had something to do with it. It had enough impact for her to tell me a couple decades later at least. All the same, this news isn't pleasant to hear.

Rush in his early days had incredible talent as an entertainer, who could laugh at himself, even while he was a pandering demagogue, who was wrong rather than right around 98.6% of the time, his ersatz statistician about right on the percentage, but just had the the integer reversed. One of the more unpleasant aspects of his act of course was his incorrigible homophobia.

Then somewhere along the way, as success went to his head, or maybe it was the drugs, he became a boring hack, and I never listened to him again. He was one day older than me, and we both got into medical trouble around the same time. But I lucked out, and dodged the bullet. It was a very close call however.

I view him despite all his notoriety  and financial success, as a tortured soul. He was never real at peace with himself, or the world. And for that I pity him.

Considering how hard he lied against efforts to give Americans healthcare, it's hard for me to find much sympathy. How many others are dead prematurely or sick because he used his platform to do this?
