The second map feels more right to me, and that's because Atlas colors are pure. The 40% shade is the pure hexadecimal shade for 100% red or blue and 0% other. Two f's before or after 4 zeros. Darker colors simply decrease the brightness of the shade, dd instead of ff in hexdecimal code for 50%, bb for 60%, 99 for 70% and so on.

These colors are cartooney and unpolished, like Web 1.0 was, so modern mainstream sources don't use them, instead using impure shades. Our brand new electoral college calculator/map generator uses these impure shades. Because mainstream sources use the Y2K switched colors, I'm used to impure shades using them. So mainstream colors "feel" correct on the new calculator.

Have your preferences changed? Discuss.

I think it’s time Atlas accepts reality and changes colors to match the mainstream consensus, frankly. “Blue and red states” are as widely accepted a part of the political lexicon nowadays as anything, and have been for 20 years. The stubborn adherence to the old color scheme is starting to get ridiculous.

But could you imagine Democratic posters with blue avatars and Republican posters with red ones? It just feels wrong. Tongue

Well actually yes. Blue is my favorite color, KY is the bluegrass state, and UK is blue while Louisville is red. So a blue D-KY avatar would be ideal for me.

Atlas colors only work on the old-school pixelated maps. Otherwise it's just cursed.

Map 2, obviously. The reversed color scheme always looks weird other than in the old maps. I'll use blue for Democrats and red for Republicans from now on.

You can still use the old calculator to create maps

The mainstream colors look better on maps that I take over to a history forum where most people are accustomed to the inversion from Leip's color pattern (Red for Democrats and blue for Republicans).

The reason why Atlas stuck with the old colors is that by the time red states and blue states were a widely accepted concept and color scheme, Dave had collected so much data already that it would take ages to go back and change it all.

I don't mind it as much. I mean, its a relic of the past, and in some degree adds a modicum of uniqueness to the site layout
