In my opinion, this is much worse than the Comey letter.

Not even 2 hours old and it's already got the - gate suffix.

Low-key one of the most annoying things Watergate gave us

Hot take: Not that much. I think people's opinions about Trump are much more baked in than they were in 2016. While this is a terrible (and utterly unsurprising) revelation, I can't see this swaying many people who weren't already against him.

Little to no change. He'll cry fake news and declare he is the wealthiest president and pays the most taxes, but won't produce the record --

People's opinions are baked in with Trump. He's a con. He's a fake.

The only thing this changes is how long Trump rots in jail after he loses in November.

It's good for Biden and it's coming at a time when voting is just beginning.

Bloomberg will plaster this story on every TV set in Florida.

It just enforces the idea that he knows the system and knows how to use it to his benefit. HE told us what he was and it is of no surprise to no one.

Being the case this doesn't change a thing.

It puts Trump even more on defense at a time when he absolutely cannot afford being on defense. Especially for something that's more-or-less a personal matter.

Folks judging an election story on whether or not it'll increase Bidens numbers/margins or decrease Trumps numbers are completely missing the point

It's going to chew up a day or two of media coverage though, giving Trump less time to make a comeback.

Individually, not much, but if there are continuous leaks dominating separate news cycles for weeks, yes, this will affect the race. Although the vast majority have made their minds up about how to vote, there are also "persuadable" voters with short political attention spans who decide based on the last couple of news cycles prior to casting their vote (and some of these will vote early so it doesn't have to drag on until November 3rd to have a serious impact). If stories flowing from this hog airtime, they deny Trump much-needed opportunities for good news cycles.

It probably only hurts in the sense that it makes it trickier to pull off a comeback. I do wonder if the Dems get the messaging right (by campaigning on fake businessman tactics than "doesn't pay taxes") it might genuinely dent him on economic messaging, though.

I wouldn't bet on it substantially affecting the margin of the polls, though it probably helps cement the current margin and gifts Biden an even greater chance at running the clock out. Hopefully Biden guts Trump like a fish at the debate.

Basically no impact at this point. A large pandemic that wrecked only shifted the race 4 points in Biden's favor. At this point, no one is going to change their vote based off weather or not the president payed his taxes.

I doubt the story will change any minds.  It should, but it likely won't.

The big problem for Trump is that he is behind and running out of time. He can't afford to continue losing media cycles and this story will last several days. I believe the NYT stated in the article itself that there was more to come.

This changes nothing. At this point it's clear anything Trump does personally has a big impact in the race.

Things that directly impact a person's life is a different matter (see: covid). I would also argue the supreme court will have a much bigger impact in potentially driving up turnout. Democrats should be focusing on Roe v. Wade getting overturned along with the ACA.

No change at all. As someone from the south and descendant of slaves, I have heard the age-old stories of the rich plantation owners and the poor white farmer. The plantation owner said that if he gets riicher then the poor white farmer will get richer because they were both white men but if the freedmen were to get richer it will hurt the poor white farmer. 150 years later, they're still falling for it, and it reaching other places in this country. I think they know they are being conned, I think they know Trump is not looking out for him, and they just don't care. And I think the time for the Democrat to stop caring as well.
