Greece did a lockdown early with good government response and despite an aging population has had way better results than much of Europe and the United States.

Meanwhile we're plunging into another Great Depression. That frightens me most of all.

Which is why we need another New Deal.

Agreed. But one that focuses heavily on digitization, infrastructure and green energy (while I have some issues with the Green New Deal, a fundamental change towards carbon neutrality and energy efficiency is definitely needed). But that will only happen if the Trump/McConnell party gets a crushing defeat in November.

Thankfully our government acted swiftly and took measures before people started dying.
I'm honestly surprised that we followed these orders without much fuss. People got scared by what happened in Italy and stayed indoors.

I do not agree with totalitarianism. Social distancing is one thing, and partial lockdowns for a few weeks is another. But going on two months and beyond? People won’t stand for it. Nor should they.

Long and interesting report based on a national survey of 22,000+ from April 16-26:

Don’t exactly see the point in stuff like this.

“Despite that, almost 9 out of 10 Americans believe it is at least somewhat likely that the United States will find conclusive evidence that Iraq has weapons of mass destruction or the facilities to develop them.”

https://news.gallup.com/poll/8038/seventytwo-percent-americans-support-war-against-iraq.aspx

Okay, so 9/10 Americans in 2003 believed Saddam had WMD. Does the strong polling mean he has WMD? Of course not.

Saying that 80% currently think shutdowns are a good idea doesn’t mean that in a few years we won’t look back and realize how mistaken we really were. The poll numbers are meaningless.

Really fascinating survey results, thanks for the link!

A couple especially interesting bits of analysis from the first few pages:
- Only 18% of people support “reopening the economy” within the next 2 weeks, but only 26% are willing to wait longer than 8 weeks (p. 6)
- Trump’s approval rating is below that of EVERY governor (p. 9)
- The state where the most people think their state government has overreacted to the outbreak is Wisconsin (25%), followed by Michigan (24%).
- The state where the most people think their government has not taken the virus seriously enough is South Dakota (35%), followed by Florida and Iowa (32%) (p. 13)

Once they start reopening we're going to see how much demand there is actually go back to doing the old things I think this is going to be an interesting thing to watch because I don't think people are just going to be rushing back to do what they used to before the pandemic because the virus is still out there we didn't stop it

Quote
Kushner calls US coronavirus response a "great success story."

President Donald Trump's senior adviser and son-in-law, Jared Kushner, praised the administration's response to the coronavirus pandemic as a "great success story" on Wednesday -- less than a day after the number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the United States topped 1 million.

Kushner painted a rosy picture for "Fox and Friends" Wednesday morning, saying that "the federal government rose to the challenge and this is a great success story and I think that that's really what needs to be told."

https://edition.cnn.com/2020/04/29/politics/jared-kushner-coronavirus-success-story/index.html

And if you watch Fox and Friends, you're exactly the type of bubble dweller who'd believe this.

For the record, on Tuesday morning I had a cardiac incident and a pulmonary embolism because of the lockdown.

Everyone who supported the lockdowns happy now?

I'm sorry to hear that and hope you're feeling better.  Of course nobody is happy about it.  But just out of curiosity, why do you blame the lockdown for it?

For the record, more people have died from the virus than the entire f***ing Vietnam War in just two months. Yes I am happy with the lockdowns. No I am not happy with the situation.

Now imagine the stress of being in a high risk of infection group and everybody is just wandering about their daily lives all around you.

Glad to see you’re ok.

I really wonder how the response would be different/better if we didn't have President Tide Pod running the show.

Kemp to lift statewide shelter-in-place for most Georgians on Friday

Quote
Gov. Brian Kemp will lift a statewide shelter-in-place order for most of Georgia’s 10.6 million residents starting Friday as he continues to roll back coronavirus restrictions, though he urges Georgians to stay at home when possible to contain the pandemic.

The order requires elderly and “medically fragile” residents to shelter in place until June 12, and calls for businesses to follow a host of existing restrictions through May 13 in order to remain open.

It amazes me at how quickly Republican Governors are moving to reopen their states, while Democratic Governors (with the exception of Jared Polis) are moving much more slowly. We'll see what the results are from these two approaches.

Continuing my coverage of the "mandatory mask rollout", Denver will soon require its residents to wear masks in public: https://denver.cbslocal.com/2020/04/29/coronavirus-masks-required-colorado/. Summit County and Boulder have also implemented mandatory mask orders. Frontier Airlines is requiring its passengers to wear masks as well.
