One of my friends attended AIPAC, so there's a nonzero chance I've already come into contact with it.

Countries ranked by mortality rate:

1. Italy - 4.96%
2. USA - 3.97%
3. China - 3.84%
4. Australia - 3.75%
5. Iran - 2.95%
6. Hong Kong - 2.61%
7. Spain - 2.53%
8. France - 1.69%
9. Japan - 1.39%
10. The Netherlands - 1.13%

USA have lost top spot to Italy who saw a spike in cases and deaths in the latest numbers. The Italian Government have quarantined 16 million people in Northern Italy today until April 3rd. No one in or out.

In terms of total case numbers, Italy have climbed to 2nd in the world and USA has jumped three spots over the last few days ahead of UK and Japan to move into 8th spot.

The US has around 100 new cases per day now and is increasing at a lower rate than the 6 countries above them on the case list.

Globally, the number of new cases is growing at 5,000 per day.

and the number of recoveries has now dipped back below the number of new cases.

The chances of dying in a lower age group are still remarkably low.

For example, in South Korea, no one under 30 has died from this infection and in Japan, no one under 50 has died from this infection.

I also have a potential situation of secondary exposure.  So far I'm feeling fine, apart from the hay fever that plagues me every spring when the pollen starts coming out.

The person he interacted with did the entire world a favor, at least for 14 days. Any day that goes by without me seeing Cruz's face is a good one.

Not to sound paranoid, but the question has to be asked: Is anybody else starting to feel if this is still going on by election time that Trump might use it as an excuse to prevent voting by imposing quarantines in unfriendly areas?

I sure am worried. He'll do whatever it takes to win.

This is another thing that I've been worried about, with allergy season (and we both know it can be hell in Georgia) everybody freaking out when allergies show up and panicking because they (or assuming someone in the room) has coronavirus.

I hate to praise Ted Cruz, but thank gosh!
If everyone acted like this, we would be a lot better off right now.

So judging by mortality rates...is this basically just a virus version of the “okay boomer” meme?

That is a move he is capable of making, but most of the decisive states don't have Republicans controlling the elections so he's not able to make it happen. Of course he might be able to get some red states to postpone elections while other states voted and then make the case that the election wasn't fair, but the most electoral votes he could get from those states is 233 which is of course far below 270.

That said, it's actually only 4 days, as the interaction occurred 10 days ago. So it's still an appreciated gesture, but nowhere near redeeming.

The flu is still causing more deaths.

There's also literally tens of thousands of times more cases. The fatality rate for the flu is less than 0.5% where coronavirus is 3-5% (and as high as 15% for people who are older).

That said if we'd take the flu as seriously as we're taking this, those numbers would also be much lower.

If we let coronavirus get to the point where it infects anything close to as many people as the flu, then I guarantee you it will have more deaths.

It's time to be worried.  Wash your hands and wear a mask everywhere you go.  If someone tries to shake your hand, sneeze on your hand in front of them and ask them "is it worth it dips##t".  If anyone sneezes or coughs more than four times in the office that is unrelated to water going down the wrong pipe, start throwing anything you can find around your desk in their general direction until they vacate the office.  If they still won't leave start splash soapy water at them, cause people hate being wet when they don't want to be wet.  It's the worst.  And don't let them explain themselves.  Most importantly, stock up on liquor in case you're no longer able to leave the house, because it's bound to get boring in quarantine.  Seriously: Money, Protective Gear, Food, Water, Guns, Ammo, and a few sexual partners to keep the human race alive.

This is the WHO COVID-19 situation report.  You can tell these guys at the WHO are pretty flustered given that the number of new case reports exceeds the maximum case figure in their chart on page 6.  It’s currently time to pull out all the stops to prevent the spread of Corona.
https://www.who.int/docs/default-source/coronaviruse/situation-reports/20200308-sitrep-48-covid-19.pdf?sfvrsn=16f7ccef_4

China is reporting numbers that are far too low for a country of their side given that Korea is reporting 700% more cases than them just today.  Leaked documents showed China faked the Coronavirus infection data in one province by 5,200%.
https://www.theepochtimes.com/leaked-documents-reveal-chinas-shandong-province-faked-coronavirus-infection-data-real-numbers-up-to-52-times-higher_3251354.html

We are also seeing the worst Influenza season since 2009 (H1N1), and earlier in the season we saw an end to the 30-year streak in which the A strain is more prevalent than the B.  Hospitalization rates have reached highest on record since 2004-05.  We also have a new A1N1 virus that has been seen in recent weeks.
https://www.contagionlive.com/news/us-flu-cases-reach-32-million-pediatric-hospitalization-rates-hit-record-high

Another issue that has been gaining attention in the scientific world is the biodiversity of not only the Corona virus, but also the Influenza Virus.  The link below shows a broad picture of the plurality of influenza strains spreading around the world.  We use those reports to create an effective vaccine.

CBS: Rector of prominent D.C. church tests positive for coronavirus

Quote
Washington — The first person to test positive for coronavirus in Washington, D.C., is the prominent leader of a historic Episcopal church in Georgetown, the church said Sunday.

The Reverend Timothy Cole, rector of Christ Church Georgetown, was diagnosed at the hospital Saturday night and is in stable condition, according to the Reverend Crystal Hardin, the assistant to the rector, who spoke at a press conference outside the church Sunday.

In an email to parishioners obtained by CBS News, Cole confirmed he has tested positive, and said services were suspended "out of an abundance of caution for the most vulnerable among us." All services were canceled Sunday, the first time the church has closed since a fire in the 1800s, Hardin said.

As a high school teacher in Copenhagen I am massively exposed to stuff like this. In fact just today they shut down another Copenhagen high school for the foreseeable future.

The US still has a low number of cases per inhabitant, but the death rate is terrible.

These terms do matter. Moving from containment to mitigation is a tacit admission that widespread infection has already occurred.

The major goal is now to ensure that the caseload is spread over many months rather than weeks, to allow medical supplies to be utilised more adequately, so vulnerable communities are protected.

Republican logic:
“The flu causes more deaths than people jumping off of a 1,000  foot cliff each year, so therefore jumping off a 1,000 foot cliff is less deadly than the flu!”
