Splitting his vote was an easy way for Romney to look Reasonable Smiley and I don't have a ton of respect for it but it does say a lot of good about him that he broke party lines on this at all. So two cheers for him.

Romney is also more popular in Utah than Trump. And by the time of his next election, Trump will be done one way or the other.

Incorrect. CNN mentioned this afternoon how Trump's approval is higher in Utah than Romney's.

That was the right vote, as Article II was bs. All Trump did was try to drag out subpoenas into the courts and thats isnt obstruction at all.

Romney, Manchin and Jones are finished politically.

Romney is safe in Utah.  Please.

Jones was always going to lose.

You may be right about Manchin.

I mean, Mike Lee won his seat by defeating a longstanding incumbent.  The safe thing would have been to vote to acquit, but he didn't.  I don't think Romney plans on sticking around after his current term ends because whether or not Trump is personally popular, more Utah Republicans support him than not.

Gardner and Jones are beyond doomed in November.

They were doomed anyway. I’d say this is the worst optics for SusanCollins. The attack ads really do write themselves

But then turned around and immediately voted to acquit.  I don't necessarily have an issue with a Senator voting to acquit, but that's arguably worse than saying "no witnesses, we've seen enough, and I will vote to acquit."

What they did is definitely obstruction.  On one hand, they argued to the courts that the courts had no say in a subpoena from Congress to the White House, and that Congress's solo remedy for noncompliance was impeachment.   But during impeachment, they argued that the House should have pursued things further through the courts.  Sorry, but you can't have it both ways.

Every Senator who voted to acquit Trump has zero values and zero morality. A junkie who will do anything for a fix is more principled than any of them.

That is like a prosecutor asking the defense for an alibi and the defense refuses and then the prosecutor says “ok that sounds good enough for me.”

I am, on this occasion, willing to give him the benefit of the doubt and take him at his word that he had a higher bar for voting guilty on Article II than the Democrats did. I think his statements were reasonable from the perspective of someone who did not want to vote to convict but felt it would be dishonorable to twist himself into a pretzel trying to fabricate an excuse not to.

Republicans will suffer at the ballot box this November, and deservedly so.

Yeah, that's why Trump has the highest approval rate of his entire  presidency
