Back in the 1972 election, the Nixon campaign leaked info about VP nominee Thomas Eagleton being diagnosed with depression and receiving electric shock therapy. The nation was stunned, and Eagleton had to resign. Since then the country has come a long way in being more compassionate towards mental illness. High schools in Oregon give kids mental health days off for anxiety. There is still a prejudice against people using antidepressants medications though.

I don’t know, it seems like it would hinder their campaigning ability.

I mean, basically 90% of those under 30 have one of the two if the internet is any indication

Jason Kander did admit publicly that he was suffering from PTSD and having to undergo treatment. That was after he lost the election though. Things would have been different had he been a sitting Senator.

I'm sure more than a few candidates over the years have had depression and/or anxiety, especially because these conditions are so prevalent. It doesn't mean they've been public about it though because we still have this insane stigma regarding depression. Unfortunately, I think it would harm a candidate to be public about, likely more than a more severe physical illness. Perhaps (hopefully) the younger generation will change that stigmatization.

Would someone with depression actually be interested in running for office? That seems a bit antithetical.

Depression doesn't erase narcissism.

This. I guarantee there are more than a handful of big-time elected officials who have these conditions in office right now but just don't say it publicly.

I would be surprised if someone with depression and/or anxiety hasn't already won an election somewhere. Now actually being publicly open about such conditions is a completely different story...
