In the event she's elected President of Vice President.

MA law that's currently in effect (hastily passed after Ted Kennedy's death) allows the Governor (who is a Republican) to appoint an interim nominee to serve until a special election that must be held within 145-160 days following the vacancy.

We can't, of course, rule out the legislature once again making a sudden change in the law to prevent Baker from picking a Republican Senator, like they did when Romney was Governor and Kerry ran for President.

Joe Kennedy if he loses to Markey in primary, Samatha Power already said she is running should Warren be President and Joe Kennedy is already seated.

Assuming the legislature doesn't change the law allowing Baker to appoint a replacement, I think Baker would appoint Richard Tisei to the Senate seat. Tisei is a moderate Republican who served as a state senator, and was Baker's Lieutenant Governor running mate when Baker unsuccessfully ran for Governor in 2010. I'm unsure if Tisei would serve just as a placeholder until the special election, or if he would run for the seat in the special. I suppose Lieutenant Governor Karyn Polito could be appointed to the seat as well, but I highly doubt this would happen because she'll almost certainly run for Governor when Baker retires.

I think Rep. Ayanna Pressley would be elected as Warren's successor in the special election. Two other strong contenders would be Rep. Joe Kennedy and Attorney General Maura Healey, but I think Kennedy will be elected to Markey's seat in 2020, and I think Healey has her eye on the Governor's race if/when Baker retires in 2022.

Samatha Powers stated she will run after Gov Baker appointed an interim successor. I do believe Warren is gonna be elected even if it sacrifices the Senate.  As long as Biden doesnt win. Dems have enough seats: AL, AZ, CO, GA, KS, ME and NC to make allowances for an interim replacement

LOL.

Warren isn’t winning. Biden has a 1000x better shot of winning and he’d be a good President

We aren’t winning those states either... CO and AZ yes. Everything else: No

If Markey holds off Kennedy: Joe Kennedy

If Kennedy wins; Ayanna Presley or Seth Moulton

Kennedy if he doesn’t win his primary, Moulton if he does. I could see Pressley running in a special but no way will she get appointed. Plus I think it’ll be pretty tough for her to beat Moulton in a primary. She probably won’t do much better than Capuano did in the 2010 primary.

Kennedy would have to finish a very strong second to Markey and manage to mostly avoid alienating party leaders.

Otherwise, probably Pressley.

What are the odds Baker appoints a boring, non-lefty Dem like Lynch to the seat? If he appoints a McConnell rubber-stamp to the Elizabeth Warren/Ted Kennedy seat there will surely be a negative reaction, and any Republican would be a placeholder anyway.

I really, really, really want it to be Power (she's so smart!) but that feels like a pipe dream between Kennedy (if he loses the race against Markey), Moulton, Pressley, and Healey (probably running for Gov in 2022 but maybe she'll jump in if Baker seems to be running for a third term).

If Warren is Treasury Secretary or some other Cabinet position, then Baker picks Tisei.

Baker is too moderate for the GOP. Tisei is too moderate.

Tisei would face a primary from the right.

Tisei would lose to a MA Democrat, probably.

Pressley is a good bet or someone like Maura Healey, could be an R though, who could win a low turnout special, maybe Polito or Baker, himself.

Kerry Healey could win.

Martha Coakley-type Democrat, a horrible candidate could lose again.

I'm gonna be contrarian and say Seth Moulton.  He's young at just 41, he's military, he's been in Congress longer than Pressley, and he serves on both the House Budget and Armed Services committees.
