He's one of the few big gov types I actually like, the fact he's a self-made fintech billionaire absolutely slaps, I think he did super well with how he continued gentrifying the hell out of NYC, and I just have a personal bias against smoking and although I oppose big gov getting involved in people's lives, I can't help but smile whenever anything makes it harder for people to smoke cigarettes.

Also he's not some lame, same old, small ideas big gov person like Bernie and other "Democratic Socialists" who want 1930 solutions to 2019 problems. I oppose government solving problems at all really, but if they're going to why not come up with new and innovative ideas rather than old ass ideas from the Eugene Debs days? You know.

HP, and I find it rather surprising just how many liberals on here see to turn a blind eye to his role in continuing and expanding aggressive Guiliani-era policing.

He's not really a liberal, rather a Singaporean National Action Party-type advocate of a intrusive nanny state. No wonder he praised Singapore's criminal laws while calling for executing people for drugs.

WTF!? This is blatantly false. Bloomberg is strongly opposed to the death penalty. He even once called it "murder by the state." You literally just made this up.

OK, he did not explicitly called for this in the U.S., but he did explicitly praised Singapore for executing drug offenders.

1. He was talking about drug dealers, not drug offenders. There is a HUGE difference.

2. He explicitly says in that article that we should NOT execute drug dealers in the US, just that we need to get tougher on cracking them down. It's also from 2012.

Not only is Bloomberg vehemently opposed to the death penalty, he also advocated for prison reform/the use of rehabilitation instead of imprisonment as mayor. He also decriminalized the possession of small amounts of marijuana. Under his reign, NYC's incarceration rate went down significantly despite the opposite happening nationally. Hardly "Singaporean."

Point taken.

Yuuuuuuuuuuge FF.  Smartest guy in the room wherever he goes, one of the few billionaires to actually give a damn and maybe the only one with the public policy chops to make a real difference.

Not sure what the people whining about his NYC tenure are smoking.  NYC did extremely well under Bloomberg.  That's why he got the third term.

Gentrification sure makes a difference, but not the positive one for the people.

i really don't see how gentrification is ever bad. like i hear that a lot but my whole life i've only ever seen positive effects from it, even being lower income it still seems like a great thing because it increases opportunity in your area to actually make more money. like the town i live in currently doesn't have much of anything to the point my commute kind of has to be pretty long. if a bunch of stuff started moving in (which is kind of happening rn) even if rent goes up you can make more money in the area so it evens out.

Not to mention people who own land in these lower income areas, gentrifying helps them immensely because then they can sell to some developer and have a massive wad that they never would have had otherwise which really helps the poorer people you know.

Idk i just never really understood the whole "gentrification is bad" stuff. I've only ever known it to be good for whatever area it's in.

Massive Freedom fighter. A moderate hero who's interested in solving problems, socially liberal and fiscally sane. And he's a successful businessman, who has created several good jobs. We need more people like him in congress and at the state level.
