Some may say they are heavy handed when dealing with Tibet and Xinjiang, but you need to give them credit as they have built many roads and airports with high-speed rail in the area that would not have been possible with self-rule.

Also, keep in mind China has never been a democracy for its 2000+year history so I don't think it's fair to criticize it on authoritarian lines and they have lifted millions out of poverty and they are now a middle-class developing nation.

The CCP's done a good job with development over the last few decades, but there's still the construction of the insane security state, lack of respect for rights of minority ethnic groups, major environmental issues, and so many other things which are major issues and should be heavily criticized regardless of whatever economic growth there has been since 1978.

And, of course, there is also the matter of the CCP's record before 1978.

Some may say Hitler was heavy handed when dealing with the Gypsies and Jews, but you have to give him credit for keeping the roads so clean.

Also, keep in mind that Germany had been antisemitic for at least 1500 years before Hitler, so it's not fair to criticize him for that.

If we're going to disregard the pre-1978, then yeah, there are a decent amount of governments which are worse. Still, there are a lot of middle- and lower-income countries which have governments more palatable than China's.

Deng Xiaoping is one of the most underrated 20th century world leaders of all time.

I also feel very safe in China, like, it's an extremely safe country to live.  People should visit and see the country for what it is instead of what they hear on the media.

Horrible government, but better than it was under Mao (which is not saying much).

It’s definitely safe if you’re an educated, Caucasian expat from a Western country.

We might as well be judging Russia by the standards of the Soviet Union if we’re gonna go that far back in time.

The Chinese government scares me.

It's an all-powerful dictatorship with capabilities that we haven't even began to see. It suppresses dissent, engages in threats of war, and is implementing a total surveillance state. Oh, and it's also soon to be the most powerful country in the world.

China, like Russia, has never been a democracy and the culture isn't a democratic one. This structure will stay around for a pretty damn long time.

well you did say "soon" Smiley  Sure, MAYBE, eventually, but not anytime soon and it would take the US falling.

There's the fairly substantial difference that the CPSU doesn't still govern Russia while the CCP still governs in China...

I generally agree with what you're saying and I don't think there are going to be any major changes in the Chinese system of governance barring some very unforeseen events, but I really hate this line of argument. You can say the same thing about most current Asian and African democracies prior to when they became democracies. Even in East Asia, one would think that South Korea, Japan, and especially Taiwan would be counterexamples to this line of thought.

True, but the CCP is no longer the Maoist POS it once was. Despite the Xi administration’s heavy-handed statism (compared to his predecessors), now it’s just a ruthlessly pragmatic, authoritarian everyday HG.
