Dems identity politics knows no bound..
Oh please. How many times have voters of color and women voters been told to get in line for a bland white male that whispers about their issues because he's more "electable". That wasn't identity politics? And some people may have just wanted a fresh face. There's absolutely nothing wrong with people wanting a new perspective or the perspective of a woman. This whole time when yall thought Capuano was going to win they were literally the same on every issue but now that she's won, people are "concerned" about identity politics. LOL.

I am generally pretty pro incumbent and seniority so it's no surprise that I don't take well to the "want a new perspective" shtick. It's a really easy shtick that has been abused by many crazies (e.g Joe Walsh, Moore, etc.).

Forgive me for being skeptical on anyone who campaigns on "providing a new perspective" and "changing things up". There's a reason why I was a much bigger supporter of Hillary than I was of Obama or Trump. I like seeing proof, not a shiny new object.

Between Koh leading and Capuano losing, this has not been a good night in my book.

Spoke a bit soon there. Koh is now in third place and losing by 24 points. Tongue

True that Koh is now trailing, but Trahan is hardly any better than him. Where's my L'Italien surge?

Lori Trahan     4,055    35.8%
Rufus Gifford     2,297    20.3%
Daniel Koh     1,359    12.0%
Juana Matias     882     7.8%
Barbara L'Italien 842            7.4%
16% in

Barbara L'Italien completely crashing and burning so far in MA-07. Damn. Trahan out to a surprisingly strong start, interesting considering I was under the impression that it was likely to be one of Koh, Gifford, and L'Italien.
Lori is basically a shade more left than Koh, hoping for a Gifford victory.

I seeeeeeee....! Nothing delights me more than seeing problem incumbents tossed out on their bum, but since this doesn't seem to be the case, I don't know I feel. Voters shouldn't be ousting incumbents just because - seniority is a thing, after all. But since the new candidate will vote in a very similar fashion, then, well, shrugs ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Does anyone know what Zakim in the SoS race's status is? I don't want to use up NYT articles and Politico/Vox for some reason don't show row offices (afaik)

Will mainstream media sites put Pressley on the front news, or will this stay low key?

Zakim is losing 2-1. Also, use incognito mode to get around the article limit.

CANDIDATE   VOTE   PCT.
Ayanna Pressley
5,107   56.6%

Michael Capuano*
3,913   43.4
9,020 votes, 13% reporting (34 of 270 precincts)

Bye, Felicia.

64% for a sitting governor in a primary really isn’t impressive, but given that this is Charlie Baker and MA we are talking about, I’m not sure if this result is an over- or underperformance or about what you’d expect.

Not nearly as big news as Crowley losing.

There's a State House race that's notable.  Angelo Scaccia, who's been in the Massachusetts House since the 1970s, is one of those old-school Italian conservative types whose district has evolved into one full of minorities.  He voted against the anti-discrimination bill for trans people that's on the ballot in November.  He's being challenged by four Democrats in the primary.

The fact of the matter is that women, and in particular women of color (depending on the state/district) are the backbone of the Democratic Party.  Especially given the fact that Republicans are failing horribly in doing their part to achieve gender parity in Congress, constituents are looking to the Democratic Party to create a Congress that actually looks like America.

BTW, even after tonight, 5 or 6 out of 9 members of MA House delegation will be white men.  I would've liked to see Lynch replaced over Capuano, but oh well.

This race isn't even going to end up being close, Pressley is up by almost 10 points now.

It seems like in a lot of Democratic cities we're starting to see some changing of the guard/weakening of the old machine.

It's reminding me of the House races in New York City in the late 60s and early 70s.

Of course Democratic primary voters can’t take out trash like Menendez, Lipinski, Lynch and Hastings

It really does suck that the truly crappy members like those (among others) are skating by while solid progressives like Crowley and Capuano are losing for mostly non ideological reasons.

I wouldn't say Lipinski "skated by" by any means, his win was pretty much a crossover voting induced fluke and there's a good chance he gets primaried out for real in 2020.

That said, I agree that we need to stop focusing our attention on ousting these garden variety progressives and actually turn our attention to the pernicious problem of corrupt and conservative Democrats.
