This rule was created by spiteful partisans for one reason and one reason only.

I really don’t get why this is a controversial idea. If you’re the standard bearer for one of the parties, shouldn’t you be a member of that party?

I can't really see how it is unfair that a party makes a rule like this. Political parties are private and can set whatever rules they like.

FTR this is purely symbolic.  Bernie can register as a Democrat, run, and if he loses, go back to being an Independent.

All this tells you is who really controls the playing cards, and I have little confidence in the DNC to run a clean primary in two years.

It's a symbolic attempt to undermine Bernie Sanders. If you don't want him president, beat him in the primary and not try to pull shady sh**t like this.

I am glad to see a rule that effectively bars Bernie Sanders from running for President again. His socialist ideas have already intoxicated 121 members of the house of representatives and 15 other members of the Senate, and must not be allowed to overtake America in any way, shape, or form.

It doesn't.

Key word is "effectively". I understand that Sanders could register as a Democrat to get around this, but he's been staunchly against ever doing such a thing for his entire political career.

What if you live in a state that doesn't have party registration?

If you're currently elected as a Democrat to some office, I imagine that counts. Beyond that, if you voted in the previous primary, which party's ballot you filled out is generally recorded. Beyond that - maybe you'd sign some sort of loyalty pledge to the DNC?

Dumb, functionally unenforceable and will only fan the flames of resentment even more. The only situation in which this move might make any sense would be in conjunction with a total abolition of the post-1972 primary system.

He was defeated in a primary once, but people insist that he was cheated so it's not as if defeated him would stop his supporters from claiming he was somehow treated unfairly.

All one needs to do is change registration/affiliation to Democrat, after that they're in the clear. While I don't want Bernie to run again due to his age, it's clear what the DNC is doing here, and this mindset of their's is gonna hurt us in 2020.

So what's the point of symbolic bullsh**t like this? to drive the far left away from the Democratic Party? to decrease the confidence in the Democratic party institutions?  It's not like it's gonna convince Bernie Sanders to all of a sudden run or not run for president.

The point of this is to be able to say the Clintonites "got something" in exchange for the planned neutering of superdelegates.
Which is why this all goes back to sour grapes from 2016. I say - get over it. If the so called Bernie revolution was really as popular as his supporters claim, all this rules minutiae wouldn't matter anyway.

And that more or less is the problem.

I think there is no question that some of the support Sanders received (and still receives) is based on his "I'm not a member of a political party" routine. Preventing Sanders from trying to have it both ways (an independent running in a Democratic primary) is a worthy, if minor, fight.

That aside, I think it would be a bigger problem if Democrats tried to prevent independents from voting in the primaries and the bigger thing to fight over is to eliminate the caucuses.  I know there are financial issues with that, but caucuses are clearly undemocratic with the Iowa caucus being a complete joke. (I know there are some proposed changes, or maybe they've been implemented, with that.)

And a damned good one. Join the party or don't run as its candidate. Not a single shred of sympathy.

If he wants to run for President as a Democrat, he should register as a Democrat instead of being a giant man-baby about it.
